John Sleeper III
APRIL 16, 1946 – FEBRUARY 22, 2019

Sergeant John Sleeper III, 72, of College Station, Texas, passed away peacefully on Friday February 22, 2019. He was surrounded by family and friends during his final days.
John was born in Waco, Texas on April 16, 1946. As part of a military family, John moved several times. Starting in Texas, the family moved to Georgia, Japan, Alabama, California, and Colorado. After graduating from Central High School in Cheyenne, Wyoming in 1964, John moved to College Station, Texas to attend Texas A&M University, Class of 1968. While attending Texas A&M, John was an accounting major and a proud member of the Fightin' Texas Aggie Corps of Cadets, Squadron 10. John was a member of the Judo Club and the Accounting Society. John’s camaraderie led him to spend countless hours constructing Fightin’ Texas Aggie Bonfires of record heights.

John left Texas A&M early to serve his patriotic duty in the Vietnam War. He was assigned to and served in Echo Company, 1st Battalion, 508th Infantry Regiment, 82nd Airborne Division. His military decorations include the Bronze Star Medal with “V” Device, the Bronze Star Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Combat Infantryman Badge, and Good Conduct Medal.

Following his military career, John was a successful businessman in the fields of accounting, land development, construction management and real estate. John had a passion for baseball, collecting baseball cards, politics, family, Aggie Tailgates and Texas A&M Football. Whoop! He was also a member of the American Legion, Earl Graham Post, 159, VFW, 82nd Airborne Association, 12th Man Foundation and the NRA. John enjoyed spending time with his wife, children, grandchildren, and dogs.

John was preceded in death by his parents, Juanelle and Lt. Colonel John Sleeper Jr; grandparents Grace and John Sleeper Sr; numerous other relatives.

Survivors include his wife of 45 years, Sharon, of College Station; daughter LeAnn Schneider and husband, Mark, of Waco, TX; son Robert Sleeper and wife, Amanda, of College Station, TX; son John William Sleeper and wife, Melony, of College Station, TX; granddaughter Olivia Schneider, grandson William Schneider, two step-grandsons; sisters Susie Messick, of Broomfield, Colorado, Jan Daniel and husband, Bill, of Port Lavaca, TX, and Karen Balke and husband, Keith, of Spring, TX; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Services will be 10:00 AM, Wednesday, February 27th at Memorial Funeral Chapel, College Station. Graveside Services with military honors will be at Oakwood Cemetery in Waco at 2:00 PM.

In honor of John and his devotion to Texas A&M University, the family requests that John’s loved ones wear his favorite color, so he looks down to see a sea of maroon. Maroon Out!

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to Hospice Brazos Valley or The Association of Former Students through the John Sleeper III ‘68 Memorial Fund.
