Dirk Richmond
August 26, 1960 - December 23, 2018

Dirk Richmond, 58, of Rantoul died Sunday (Dec. 23, 2018) at Carle Foundation Hospital, Urbana.

Dirk was born Aug. 26, 1960, to Donna Jean Gustafson and Bob Richmond. She survives as well as several aunts, uncles and cousins.

His father, Bob Richmond, and grandparents, Henry and Nora Dabney, preceded him in death.

Dirk grew up in the Arcola area where he attended elementary and high school. After graduating from high school, he studied accounting and finance at Texas A&M University and graduated Magna Cum Laude.

Those who knew Dirk often heard of the days gone by – the farm where mashed potatoes and dressing was served every holiday and times with special people like the days of riding in Uncle Mike's old truck and going to Aunt Renee’s, which he felt was his second home. He would also tell you that he went to M.J. Franzen Finishing School for Boys.

Dirk made a difference in many ways and many places. Dirk was a big man with a huge heart regarding animals, justice and equality. One of his biggest attributes was his tremendous sense of dry humor. He will be missed

On Dec. 16, Dirk shared this saying with friends on Facebook: "GONE FROM MY SITE, written by Henry Van Dike. I am standing upon the seashore. A ship, at my side, spreads her white sails to the morning breeze and starts for the blue ocean. She is an object of beauty and strength. I stand and watch her until, at length, she hangs like a speck of white cloud just where the sea and sky come to mingle with each other. Then, someone at my side says, 'There, she is gone.' Gone from my sight. That is all. She is just as large in mast, hull and spar as she was when she left my side. And, she is just as able to bear her load of living freight to her destined port. Her diminished size is in me – not in her. And, just at that moment when someone says, 'There, she is gone.' There are other eyes watching her coming and other voices ready to take up the glad shout, 'here she comes.' And that is dying."

As per Dirks wishes, the Illiana Cremation Society has handled his final arrangements. A date for a family and friend celebration of Dirks life has not been set.

Memorial donations may be given in his name to the Champaign County Humane Society animal shelter or any charity of your choice. Please join his family in sharing memories through his tribute wall at IllianaCremation.com.
