James Daniel Gleason
MARCH 18, 1940 – JANUARY 15, 2019

Dr. James Daniel Gleason, Ph.D. died peacefully in San Antonio, TX at the age of 78.
Dr. Gleason was born in Morgantown, West Virginia to Robert Francis Gleason and Naomi Grace Gleason. Dr. Gleason is survived by his sister, Naomi Fannett and spouse, Martin Fannett; children, Paul N. Gleason and partner, Carolyn Pederson and Heather G. Montgomery and spouse, Jay L. Montgomery; grandchildren, Lauren Montgomery and Jason Montgomery. He is preceded in death by his wife, Katherine Gleason of Victoria, TX.

He graduated from Nederland High School, Nederland, TX in 1958. He attended Lamar State University where he received a Bachelor’s Degree. Dr. Gleason was a teacher for the Beaumont and Galveston Independent School Districts before attending graduate school at Vanderbilt University, Baylor University, University of Texas, and Texas A&M where he ultimately graduated in 1977 with a Ph.D. in political science. He was a member of the educational fraternity Phi Delta Kapp. After moving to Victoria, TX, in 1970, he worked for the Victoria Junior College as a tenured professor teaching government for over 40 years. Dr. Gleason rallied his students to participate in local government by challenging their beliefs. Republican or Democrat, he encouraged them all to vote.

Dr. Gleason was an active and dedicated member of the First United Methodist Church of Victoria, TX. He believed in the study of religion as much as the study of government. He was a scholar in all aspects of life. He volunteered for the Boy Scouts of America, Victoria County Democrat Club, and Phi Delta Kappa. His was humble with community philanthropic efforts. It was important to him to never make anyone feel less because you have more.

A Memorial Service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Friday, January 25th at First United Methodist Church located at 407 N. Bridge St, Victoria, TX with a reception to follow. Reverend Tim Barlow will officiate the ceremony. All are welcome to attend and celebrate Dr. Gleason’s life. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the Nazareth Academy School located at 206 W Convent St, Victoria, TX, and the First United Methodist Church. The family would like to thank the nursing staff of Citizens Medical Center for their compassion and efforts, as well as the doctors and staff of Brook Army Medical Center for their dedication and care.
