Dr. Harold Edward Brown
May 17, 1932 - December 23, 2018
Harold Edward Brown, 86, passed away at his home in Houston, Texas on Sunday, December 23, 2018. Funeral Service will be held Thursday, December 27, 2018 at 2:00 p.m. at Phillips & Luckey Chapel in Caldwell with Rev. Lee Caldwell presiding. Visitation will be at 1 p.m. until the service begins. Burial will be at Caldwell Masonic Cemetery with Military Honors.
Harold was born May 17, 1932 to Thomas Lafayette and Velma (Atkinson) Brown in Tyro, Arkansas. He married Stella Mae Kirtz Brown on February 22, 1963. They lived in Caldwell for several years before moving to San Antonio then to Weslaco where they resided for 40 years.
He attended Blinn College and graduated from Texas A&M with a PHD in Biochemistry. Harold was a lead scientist with the Screwworm Eradication Program with the USDA. He successfully eradicated screwworms to the Panama Canal where they established a control zone. Harold also was able to identify and synthesize sex pheromones of the Mexican Rice Borer, an invasive pest of sugarcane.
Harold was a Baptist by faith and was also a member of the Highland Hills Masonic Lodge #1373 AF & AM of San Antonio.
Preceding him in death were his parents, and his wife, Stella, sisters, Marie Coyle, Faye Briggs and Lucille Ponder. Brothers Kyrel Brown and James Brown.
He is survived by one daughter, Beverly Brown Ward, one step-daughter, Pam Hubbard, one step-son, Wesley Kirtz. One brother, Eugene Brown, and two sisters, Lavon Hallman and Carolyn Cherry. Four grandchildren, Jon Hubbard, Wayne Hubbard, Chris Chamberlain and Jennifer Roberts. Four great grandchildren, Blayden and Logan Chamberlain, Jackson Roberts, Sydney and Levi Hubbard.
Pallbearers are John McEnaney, Patrick Cochran, Thad Urquhart, Blayden Chamberlain, David Boring, and Jackson Roberts.
