Dr. James E. (Jim) Cook, DVM of Amarillo passed into the presence of God on Wednesday November 21, 2018.
A memorial service will be held on Friday January, 4th at 10:00 a.m. in Boxwell Brothers Ivy Chapel with Rev. Gene Shelburne officiating.
Jim was a native of Sweetwater, Texas; graduated from Texas A&M University in 1953 and earned his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine in 1955 from Texas A&M University. He worked for the U.S. Government in Ft. Worth, Texas in the Veterinary Inspection Service for
a year, then served as a Captain in the U.S. Air Force in the Veterinary Service 1956-58 with a tour of duty in Hokkaido, Japan. After his discharge he moved to Amarillo, Texas where me met and married his late wife Virginia Sue Cook on March 5th 1960.
Jim was actively involved as an ‘Aggie’ alumnus, he coached numerous Kids Inc. teams, Little League baseball teams, served as president of the Amarillo Executive Association, the Amarillo Toastmasters Club, and was a past president of the Amarillo Veterinary
Medical Association. He was a very active Rotarian serving in numerous leadership positions over the years and was named District 5730’s Governor from 1991 – 1992. He was active in state and national professional associations. His civic affiliations included
service as a board member of several Boards of Directors: the Cerebral Palsy Treatment Center, Better Business Bureau, Amarillo Chamber of Commerce, Amarillo YMCA, the Tascosa Country Club, and the Horn Creek Conference Grounds of Westcliffe, Colorado. He
was also a member of the Area Advisory Board, High Plains Baptist Hospital and served this board as President in 1989-91. He served in all lay capacities in the Paramount Community Church and was a member of Gideons International.
He was preceded in death by his daughter, Sue Ann Dean and son, Dr. James D. Cook.
Survivors include: Son, Brad and wife Tina of Houston, TX, and their children Alexandra of West Chester, PA and Anastasia of Brooklyn, NY. Daughter, Kay Mikalic and husband John and their children Kaitlyn and J.T of Furlong, PA. Daughter-in-law, Leanne Linden
of Houston, TX and her children; Elise Norcini and husband Mark, and their children Gabriel and William of Chicago, IL; Emily Bowden and her husband Matt, and their children Charlie and Grant of Boerne, TX; Natalie Owens and her husband Seth, and their children
Eric and Everette of Morristown, NJ. Daughter-in-law, Karen Cook and her children; Olivia, Laura, and Jonathan of Dallas, TX.
