date of death October 2 2018

Edward Walter Schultz passed away on October 2, 2018 in McMinnville, Oregon after gradual diminishment of old age. Ed touched many lives in his 98 years and will be missed and remembered by all.

Ed, fifth of nine children born to Mathias and Martha (Wanzek) Schultz, was originally from Windsor, North Dakota. Due to the Depression and the dust storms in 1936, the family moved to Canby and two years later settled on a farm in Mt. Angel, Oregon.

After graduating from high school Ed worked in the Portland Shipyards. He enlisted in the Navy in November 1942 at the age of 22 serving as a gunnery mate aboard PT-490 throughout World War II. When he returned from the war he enrolled at Oregon State College (now Oregon State University) and graduated in 1948 with a degree in horticulture/nursery management. His post-graduate education was completed at Texas A & M with a masters degree in horticulture and a minor in genetics.

Ed and wife, Pat, and family settled in Oregon and he formed Calorwash Nursery on a forty-acre farm in Aurora. He was active in the Oregon Association of Nurseries for many years and served as president in 1978 as well as being an active member in the International Plant Propagators' Society. For a number of years he taught propagation at Clackamas Community College. Joining the Mazamas in the 1970's, Ed became an avid mountain climber and scaled every major peak in Oregon as well as Mount Popocatepetl near Mexico City and Mount Kenya in Africa.

Ed was preceded in death by his parents, his sisters Regina Schultz, Dolores Etzel, Louise Waldock, Monica Gaffke, Josephine Schultz, and his brother Anthony and Felix, his wife Pat, son Carl, and daughter Lois Koenig and his sister Rita Hudak who passed away a few days after her brother. He is survived by his son's Stanley Schultz of Molalla, Oregon and Wayne Schultz of Garibaldi, Oregon, daughter Barbara Rageh of Orinda, California, four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

A graveside service will be held at Willamette National Cemetery on Tuesday, October 9, 2018 at 2:30 pm. There will be a Celebration of Life on December 1, 2018 from 11:00 - 1:00 pm at St. James Catholic Church in Molalla, Oregon.
