Thurman Neal Wilson, age 96, of Wharton, died Monday, Jan. 16, 2012 in a Wharton nursing home following an extended illness. He was born on Nov. 8, 1915 in Wharton the son of the late Henry Evan Wilson and Clara Lum Wilson.
Mr. Wilson was a graduate of Wharton High School and later attended Texas A&M University. He was a lifelong resident of Wharton and a member of First Baptist Church in Wharton. He worked as a manager of cotton gins in Wharton, Uvalde and Bishop until his retirement. He married Lela Burton on May 9, 1937 in Wharton. She preceded him in death on Sept. 12, 2005. He later married Mamie McCloud in March 2006 in Wharton. He enjoyed fishing, hunting and working for his church.
In addition to his parents and his first wife, he was preceded in death by his sister, Mary Lee Stevens; and brothers, Harry Wilson, Pete Wilson and Horace Wilson Sr.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 21, 2012 at First Baptist Church in Wharton with Rev. Mack Mathis officiating. Burial will follow in Wharton City Cemetery.
Survivors include his wife, Mamie McCloud Wilson of Wharton; daughter, Harriett Montgomery of Wharton; son, Bill Wilson and wife, Norma Jean, of Batesville; and step- son, Robert Sterling and wife, Cindy, of Santa Fe. He was also survived by his seven grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren with two more on the way.
