Harold August "Gus" Sanders Jr
November 29, 1930 - September 14, 2018
Gus Sanders, age 87, met his Heavenly Father on September 14, 2018. Gus was born in Refugio, TX on November 29, 1930 to Harold and Edna Sanders.
Gus moved to Carlisle, TX in 1932 where the family lived in a tent while his Uncle Howard built them a 3 room “shotgun house”. In his early years, he grew up in various oilfield camps and nearby towns. Gus graduated from New London High School in 1948 and thereafter
enrolled in Texas A&M University. He graduated in the Class of 1952 with a B.S. in Industrial Education. On June 3, 1952, he married Patsy Sue Shindler of Longview, TX. After graduation and marriage, Gus served in the Air Force and spent a year serving our
Country in Korea. After he returned, he started his working career. He was always involved in the oilfield in some way or another. He initially worked many years for Liberty Mutual Insurance Company in risk and safety management, then for Texaco until he retired
in 1995. Gus was also a Registered Safety Engineer for over 25 years.
He was a long-time active member of Council Road Baptist Church in Bethany, OK and later of Colonial Hills Baptist Church in Tyler. After retiring and moving back to East Texas (Tyler, TX) in 1995, he was involved in the London Alumni Association and supporter
of the London Museum.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 67 years, his daughter, Laura Sue Copeland; and sister, Betty Lois Robuck. He is survived by his son, Scott Sanders and daughter-in-law Ann Sanders (Marble Falls, TX). Grandchildren include Ben Sanders (Austin, TX) and
Jesse Copeland (Dallas, TX) as well as his devoted sister-in-law Shirley Bullock (Tyler).
The family wishes to also acknowledge the loving care provided by Carla Hardaway, Johnnie Wilson and Heart to Heart Hospice.
Burial will follow at Cathedral in the Pines in Tyler, TX at a later date under the direction of Stewart Family Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, the family asks you to consider a donation to support the research for a cure for either Macular Degeneration or
Alzheimer’s Disease.
I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. 2 Timothy 4:7
