Delmer Maurice Woods, Jr.
May 25, 1948 - March 24, 2018

Delmer Maurice Woods, Jr., passed away peacefully on Friday, March 23, 2018, at his ranch in Elgin, Texas. Delmer was born on May 25, 1948, in Pittsburgh, PA, the first child of Margy Ray Woods and Delmer M. Woods. He spent most of his life in Texas.

As a teenager, he earned the rank of Eagle Scout from the Boy Scouts of America. He graduated high school from Mew Mexico Military Institute. He was a proud Class of ’70 graduate of Texas A&M University and earned his MBA from the University of Texas.

Delmer’s first career was in sales and marketing for pharmaceutical and medical equipment companies, most recently Hewlett Packard. In 1988, he began a second career managing the family’s Winged W Ranch in Elgin, Texas. His professional management greatly elevated the quality of the livestock, physical plant and land infrastructure.

Delmer was a longtime member of the First Presbyterian Church of Elgin and a faithful supporter of Elgin Parks and Recreation. His Eagle Scout and Texas A&M experiences helped form the values by which he lived his life. Those included integrity, loyalty and preparedness. Every friend and family member knew that if needed, Del would assist day or night.

He was preceded in death by his father. He is survived by his mother, Margy Ray Woods; his sister, Kathryn and her husband Gregory K. Zaney; his nephews, Gregory K. Zaney II, Matthew A. Zaney, and William A. Zaney; and many cousins, lifelong friends and their children, whom he also considered to be his nieces and nephews. As the eldest of thirteen grandchildren, Delmer played an important leadership role in the Woods family.

The family will receive guests at the Elgin Funeral Home on Friday, March 30th from 5:30 PM until 7:00 PM A Funeral Service will be Conducted at the First Presbyterian Church of Elgin on Saturday, March 31st at 10:00 AM with Pastor Amy Meyer Officiating. Honoring Delmer as Pallbearers are Dr. Larry M. Kornegay ‘71, Michael G. Portie ‘70, Dr. Robert C. Gros ’72, Murry Woods, Monty Woods and David Woods. Honorary Pallbearers are Gregory K. Zaney II, Matthew A. Zaney, William A. Zaney, Mike Woods, Jon Woods, Dr. Joseph G. Portie, II,’94, Kyle J. Kornegay ’04, Steven J Rizzo ’93, and Marshall Odom. Internment will follow at the Elgin Cemetery. Memorials may be made in Delmer’s Honor to the First Presbyterian Church of Elgin.
