March 14, 1973 - February 8, 2018

Loren Paul Helton, 44, of Bryan, died Thursday, February 8, 2018 at his home. Funeral services will be 10:00 am Tuesday, February 13, at Marek-Burns-Laywell Funeral Home in Cameron with Rev. Dimitrij Colankin officiating. Burial will follow in the Marlow Cemetery. Visitation will be Monday from 6-8:00 pm with a rosary and vigil at 7:00 pm at the funeral home.

Loren was born March 14, 1973 in Bryan to Donald J and Charlene (McDermott) Helton. He graduated from Bryan High School in 1991 and received his Bachelor of Science degree in Agriculture Economics from Texas A&M University in 1996. At the time of his death, he was training at the Texas Department of Criminal Justice Training Academy.

He is survived by: his parents, Don & Charlene Helton of Bryan; daughter, Holland Alexa Helton of Franklin; son, Hayden Paul Helton of Franklin; and grandmothers, Ruth Helton of Bastrop and Frances McDermott of Cameron.

Memorials may be made to St. Anthony Catholic Church Building Fund; St. Monica Catholic Church Restoration Fund or Marlow Cemetery Association.

Born March 14, 1973 in Bryan, TX to Donald J and Charlene (McDermott) Helton

Died February 8, 2018 at his home in Bryan, TX

Graduated from Bryan High School in 1991 & received his Bachelor of Science degree in Agriculture Economics from Texas A&M University in 1996.

He called the Brazos Bottom (Steele Store community) his home since 1977. Growing up Loren spent many summers at his grandparents’ homes outside of Austin, TX and Cameron, TX as well as the turn rows of the Brazos Bottom crop land. While staying in Austin he learned all about being a dairy farmer and driving Pappaw’s pickup and when he was in Cameron he was learning to be a rancher. He also loved spending time in his uncle Paul’s leather shop making belts, billfolds, saddles, and other leather products.

While at Bryan High School, Loren was an accomplished FFA Member and received many awards including Outstanding Greenhand, Chapter Farmer, Outstanding Future Farmer, Lone Star Farmer and American Farmer Degree.

He loved calf roping, steer dogging, team roping and participated in many youth rodeos, college rodeos, and amateur rodeos. His favorite pastime was swinging a rope and dancing to Jake Hooker.

At the time of his death he was training at the Texas of Criminal Justice Training Academy in Palestine, TX. He had already received his letter of employment and a unit assignment as a Correctional Officer III at the Eastham Unit in Love lady, TX, upon completion of the academy assignment. He was really looking forward to this new venture in his life.



Loren was preceded in death by his grandfathers, Thomas J Helton and Charles E. McDermott Jr. and his uncle Paul C. McDermott for which he was named after.

Parents, Don & Charlene Helton, Bryan, TX

Daughter, Holland Alexa Helton, Franklin, TX

Son, Hayden Paul Helton, Franklin, TX

Grandmothers, Ruth Helton, Bastrop, TX & Frances McDermott, Cameron, TX

Many aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends
