Young, George Donald

October 4, 1930 - February 4, 2018

George Donald Young met his Lord and Savior face to face on February 4, 2018 at the age of 87. He was a devout Christian husband and father, a season ticket holder for Aggie football, basketball and baseball, and loyal friend. He is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 65 years, Margaret Ann Young.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Don and Nell Young of Bryan; his in-laws, Shorty and Myrtle (Mathis) Halbrooks; and brothers-in-law, Norman Halbrooks, Al Nichols, Robert Wimpee, and Tom Tope.

He married the love of his life, Margaret Ann Halbrooks, on October 17, 1952, at Central Baptist Church, Bryan. They were blessed with six children and their spouses, Buddy (Susan) Young, Canyon, TX; David (Lisa) Young, Ridgway, CO; Jane (Marlin) Crouse, Bryan, TX; Donna (Tom) Ascol, Cape Coral, FL; Henry (Sherilan) Young and Ruth (Thomas) Goehl both of Bryan, TX. PaPa, as he was affectionately known left behind, 18 grandchildren and their spouses and 22 great-grandchildren. Also surviving to cherish his memory are his siblings, Della Nichols, Bryan, TX and, Charlie Young and his wife Kathy, College Station, TX; sisters-in-law, Carolyn Bain and Audrey Wimpee Tope; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Don was born in Franklin, N.C. He attended Maydell High school where he was on the 1948 State Championship Basketball team. He became a member of the Class of '52, Corps of Cadets, at Texas A&M receiving his BS ('52)and MS('76) degrees. Upon commission as a 2nd Lieutenant in the US Army, he served honorably for more than 20 years. As an Airborne Ranger and a member of the Corps of Engineers he served in Vietnam, Korea, Germany, and Japan and retired from active duty as a Lt. Colonel.

He returned to Bryan where he remained throughout the rest of his life. He was employed at TAMU Computer Science Dept and Texas Transportation Institute until his second retirement in order to pursue his love of Aggie sports, Senior Olympics horseshoes, and volunteer community service.

As a result of spending his early life in the forest of East Texas where his father served with the US Forest Service, Don loved the outdoors. As a member of Central Baptist Church since 1953, he served as a Deacon and Preschool Teacher for over 40 years. Along with his love of Aggie sports, he refereed high school football, basketball, track and volleyball for over 60 years. He loved to mentor and encourage young people through his many volunteer activities, including the 17 years he served at the College Station Medical Center and his time on the Board of Directors. He was servant-hearted, with a generous and giving spirit. He was a man of great integrity and honor.

The Young family would like to thank John Maurer of Central Baptist Church for his faithful visits and outpouring of love, Dr. Michael Jones and the caring staff of Pathway Hospice for their comforting and compassionate care along with the staff of Waterford Memory Care Unit for their remarkable and patient care. Most of all we are thankful to God for his constant strength and comfort during Don's earthly battle with Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis and Dementia.

As his final act of service, and love for Texas A&M University, Don donated his body to TAMU Medical School. In lieu of flowers, to honor his memory, charitable gifts can be sent to Pathway Hospice 1121 Briarcrest Dr. #302, Bryan 77803 or Central Baptist Church (Children's building fund) 1991 FM 158, College Station 77845. Those desiring to leave a note of encouragement or share a memory may do so at OldAg1952@gmail.com.

A private family celebration of thanksgiving and remembrance for a life well lived, will be held at a later date.

"I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith." 2 Timothy 4:7
