George Robert Hughes, 94, passed away on January 27, 2018. Mr. Hughes was born in New Brunswick, New Jersey, on July 29, 1923, to Rebecca and Martin Hughes. He grew up in College Station, Texas, and graduated from Texas A&M University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Aeronautical Engineering.

As a member of the Army Air Corp from June 1942 to December 1945, Mr. Hughes served as an electrician with the 334th Station Complement Squadron in the South Pacific during World War II. He was awarded the American Theater Campaign Medal and the Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal with one bronze star and one bronze arrowhead.

Mr. Hughes moved to El Paso, Texas in 1948. He met his wife Lena at Trinity Methodist Church and they were married in October, 1949. Mr. Hughes began his career in El Paso as a hydraulic engineer with the International Boundary and Water Commission, where he worked until his retirement in 1978. During his career, he helped with the planning and building of the Amistad Dam in Del Rio, Texas, the Chamizal Convention of 1963 with Mexico, and was an early pioneer in the use of computer modeling to solve complex engineering problems. From 1978 to 1983 he was the Business Administrator for Trinity-United Methodist Church. He also taught several math courses at El Paso Community College.

Mr. Hughes was a member of Trinity-United Methodist Church from 1948 to his passing and held nearly every lay leadership position in the church, often multiple times. He taught adult and children Sunday School class for 60 years. In 1963, Mr. Hughes was asked to serve as a temporary teacher of the Mizpah class while they searched for a permanent teacher. He remained as "temporary" teacher for the next 54 years, giving his last lesson just a few days before his passing. In recognition of his service to the church, he was honored with a "Pillar of the Church" award in 2005.

He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Lena Hammond Hughes; his three sons, George Robert Hughes, Jr. and his wife, Mary-Alayne Hughes; David Lee Hughes; Thomas Martin Hughes and his wife Sandra Hughes; and two grandsons, Thomas David Hughes and his wife Sarah Hughes, and Andrew Robert Hughes. He was pre-deceased by his sister, Jane Fleming, and his brother, Martin Hughes, Jr.
