Deacon Dr. Howard Palms
October 30, 1920 - December 31, 2017

After 97 years of service to Christ, Deacon Dr. Ange Howard Palms passed peacefully at his home this New Years Eve, surrounded by loved ones and his favorite books, images, and scriptures. Deacon Palms leaves a long legacy of accomplishments, from raising a large family, to caring for the beloved pets of Texas residents in his veterinary medicine practice, to 43 years of service to the Catholic Church as a Deacon. After graduation from Texas A&M University with a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine in 1945, he served in the US. Army relief mission to restore the devastation of Europe after World War II. His first civilian job as a veterinarian was caring for horses and cattle for the famous King Ranch, which set the precedent for his years of providing veterinarian services to remote farms and ranches where he arrived in his small airplane and often rode out on horseback. He rode horseback even up into his 80s. In 1960 he started the Preston Center Pet Clinic, one of the first businesses in North Dallas' Preston Center, which clinic still exists to this day.

After years of intense formation, Dr. Palms was ordained as a Deacon in 1974 and served through St. Monica Church in Dallas, St. Jude Church in Gunbarrel and most recently St. Patrick's Church in Denison where he regularly performed the sacraments of baptisms, marriages, and assisted with homilies and communion at Mass. Deacon Palms was well known for his relentless charity work, tirelessly helping those who were sick, poor and needy at every opportunity.

Deacon Palms has been a proud member of the Knights of Columbus for over 50 years, where served as Acting Chaplin and Minister of Charity. In his many religious pilgrimages in the US and abroad, he received personal blessings from five different Popes, as well as Saint Teresa of Calcutta.

Deacon Palms was born on October 30, 1920 to Robert and Louise Palms of Dallas, who, along with his sister, Roberta Schnitzus, predeceased him. Deacon Palms is survived by his wife of 69 years, Margaret Mazanec Palms, his 5 children, Robert Palms of Branson MO, Edward Palms of Greenwood CO, Peggy Palms-Barrett of Boone, NC, Nancy Palms-Reed of Denison, TX, and Judy Palms of Denison, TX. He is also survived by his 5 grandchildren, Natalie Popplewell of Denison, TX, Kenyon Reed of Redding, CA, Keith Chapman of Franklin, TN, Elizabeth Palms of Greenwood, CO, and Kristin Palms of Dallas, TX, two great-grandchildren, Taylor McDonald of Howe, TX and Madeline Mitchell of Watauga, TX, and one great-great-grandchild, Sophia Geer of Howe, TX.

Services to be held at St. Patrick’s Church, 314 N Rusk Ave, Denison, TX 75020. Evening Vigil, Rosary and Family Visitation at 6 pm on Thursday, January 4. Rite of Christian Burial at 11:00 am, Friday, January 5.
