S. Chester “Ted” Jones
Chester Jones, 94, passed away Monday, November 27, 2017. A memorial service will be held at First United Methodist Church, 506 E. 28th Street, Bryan on Saturday, December 2, 2017 at 10 AM with Final Military Honors to follow outside of the church. Graveside services will begin at 2 PM also on Saturday, December 2, 2017 at the Midway Cemetery, Midway, Texas.
Chester was born on August 5, 1923, in Thomasville, Georgia, the son of Ira P. Jones and Wray Chester Jones. As the family moved around, Chester attended schools in Winston Salem, New Orleans, Dayton, Ohio, and graduated from Highland Park High in Dallas.
He attended Texas A&M, leaving for 4 years to serve in the 309th Engineer Combat Battalion in the European Theater during World War II. He returned to Texas A&M after his discharge, married Ross Tarpley of Midway, Texas, in June 1948, between his junior and senior years. He graduated in 1949 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Management Engineering. He received his MBA from Southern Methodist University in 1963.
Chester worked at Montgomery Ward, Dresser Industries, and Texas Instruments until 1969 when he left to establish his own manufacturing company, Musiconics International, in Waco. With the addition of another patent and the founding of Mediconics International, Chester sold both companies and entered the field of electronic security in Dallas.
He registered as a Fire Protection Engineer in 1977 and served on the Technical Standards Committee for the National Fire Alarm Code for thirteen years. He served on the Texas State Fire Alarm Advisory Council for five years and the city of Dallas Advisory Council for six years.
He moved his family to Bryan in 1999 after the death of his son, Tom, and continued as a Fire Alarm Consultant until his retirement in 2002. In Bryan, he served on the Building Standards Commission.
He enjoyed the hobbies of lapidary and woodworking. His intarsia’s of praying hands and “gig’ ems” were given to many friends. He enjoyed hunting and claimed to be the builder of the world’s greatest deer stands. He enjoyed working for his church, First United Methodist of Bryan and participated in many church and mission projects and helped found the P.E.T. Project.
Chester moved to Madisonville in 2015, and was an active member of the First United Methodist Church of Madisonville. He served as a church trustee, on the church council and as church security for two years.
Most will remember him as the person that would volunteer to build a computer desk, podium or anything else someone needed.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 66 years, Ross, his only son, Tom, his parents, his two brothers, and his sister.
His survivors include his daughter, Sheri, and many nieces and nephews.
