DR. WILLIAM (BILL) PERRY HOLMES
Dr. William (Bill) Perry Holmes passed away at his home in Floresville, Texas on October 15, 2017. Bill was born to Roy and Eugenia Perry Holmes on February 16, 1939. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his maternal grandparents, A. W. (Siley) and Sally Allen Perry; paternal grandparents, William Sidney and Geneva Fuller Holmes; and great-nephew, Brandon Perry May.
Bill graduated from W.R. Mills High School in 1957, attended Georgia Military Academy, and then proudly served in the U.S. Army during times of historic significance, pursuing an interesting career of service to his country and later to the education community in the San Antonio area. While serving in the Army, Bill played on the U.S. Army basketball team. He also played in the U.S. Army Band for one year. (Both basketball and band were pursuits Bill first followed in his high school years in Louisburg.) Bill's military career included his work at the Pentagon in the Judge Advocate Office. He served four years in Germany and was a member of the honor guard during President John F. Kennedy's visit to the Berlin Wall. His service included two tours of duty in Viet Nam. He was also stationed at the Panama Canal during the period of unrest. While stationed in Kansas City, Bill received a full scholarship through Operation Boot Strap and earned his BS degree from the University of Missouri. Bill served his last assignment at Fort Sam Houston, Texas and retired from the Army after 26 years of service to his country.
Bill and his wife, Janie, made San Antonio their family home. Bill was well known and highly respected in the San Antonio educational circle. While teaching in high school, he continued his own education and earned a Master's degree at the University of Texas San Antonio, becoming principal at one of the largest high schools in San Antonio. Bill modeled the role of life-long learner as he earned his doctorate in education from Texas A&M University.
Bill is survived by his wife, Janie; son, Kevin (Becky) of San Antonio; and daughter, Julie (Mark) Breyer; and five grandchildren, each the light of his life, Nathan, Alexandra, Samantha, Austin, and Wyatt Breyer, all of LaVernia, Texas. Bill is also survived by his sister, Carolyn (Billy) Hudson of Louisburg; and three special nieces, Cathy, Ginny, and Laura Anne; five great-nieces and nephews; and nine great-great-nieces and nephews.
Private burial was to take place at Fort Sam Houston, Texas, with full military honors.
