Gordon Robert Irwin
October 1, 1923 - October 10, 2014

Leander, Texas — Gordon R. Irwin, age 91, died at home on October 10, 2014. He was born on October 1, 1923 in Montclair, New Jersey to Grace Weber Irwin and Robert Leonard Irwin. He is survived by his son, Robert B. Irwin, and his grandchildren, Robert D. Irwin and Christopher F. Irwin. He is predeceased by his first wife, Jeanne Brown Irwin, his second wife, Amy Berger Fitzpatrick and his brother, Winston Leonard Irwin.

In 1941 Gordon attended Texas A&M University until he volunteered for service in the US Army in WWII. He served with the 96th Infantry Division and fought in the Pacific, participating in the battles at Leyte, Okinawa and the Philippines. After the war, he obtained his Bachelor of Science Degree with the College of Business and Public Administration from the University of Maryland where he met the love of his life, Jeanne Claire Brown. Jeanne and Gordon were married in Houston, Texas in 1950. Soon thereafter, Gordon returned to serve as an Officer in the United States Army for 26 years, retiring in 1972 as a Lieutenant Colonel. Jeanne and Gordon settled on the Texas Gulf Coast where Gordon worked for the City of Corpus Christi and later for Deep Sea Headquarters in Port Aransas. After leaving his civilian jobs, Gordon enjoyed many years of retirement with Jeanne, building custom fishing rods, playing tennis, volunteering with the local Episcopal Church and traveling in the US and abroad until Jeanne's death in 2002.

Later, Gordon rekindled his friendship with a childhood family friend, Amy Berger Fitzpatrick, who was also widowed. He moved to Florida, married Amy, and enjoyed spending time with his three step children, Bill Fitzpatrick, Bruce Fitzpatrick and Karen Flowers and their families. While in Florida, Gordon especially loved his volunteering with Homosassa Springs Wildlife State Park where he helped care for rescued manatees and other wildlife. After the death of his second wife in 2007, Gordon returned to live in Texas with his son and daughter-in-law.

Gordon initiated as a Freemason on February 23, 1959 with Camp Knox Lodge, No 919 and was a member of the Kentucky Chapter #134 National Sojourners.

Special thanks to Tiffany Brader and Texas Home Health Hospice for their friendship and gentle care of Gordon during his last months of life.

A funeral service celebrating Gordon’s life, his faith and service to country will be held on Saturday, October 18, 2014 at 2:30PM at Beck Funeral Home, 1700 East Whitestone Blvd., Cedar Park, Texas 78613. Interment will be at a later date at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, it was Gordon's desire that donations be made to The National Kidney Foundation or the Texas Lions Camp.
