James A. Isbell

Colonel James Albert Isbell was born in Plainview, Texas on February 2, 1914. He entered the service on November 25, 1940 and received his commission after completion of Aviation Cadet training on July 12, 1941. During World War II, he served in European Theater of Operations as an A36 and Spitfire pilot. From June 1942 until July 1943, Colonel Isbell completed 91 combat missions with 150 combat hours. He served overseas in the Caribbean from May 3, 1946 until August 8, 1948; in Germany from August 9, 1948 until December 17, 1948, and in Iraq from October 28, 1956 until July 28, 1958. During his military service, Colonel Isbell received the following decorations and awards: Distinguished Flying Cross, Air medall with 9 Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster, Air Force Outstanding Unit Award, American Defense Service Medal, American Campaign Medal, European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal with three Bronze Service service stars, World War II Victory Medal, National Defense Medal with one Bronze Service Star, Air Force Longevity Service Award with one Silver Oak Leaf Cluster. Throughout his military service, Colonel Isbell has given faithful and conscientious service to his country and his standard of conduct and leadership provided an excellent example for those who were associated with him during his military career. Colonel Isbell was Chief of Staff, 10th Air Force Air Defense Command when he retired. The United States Air Force and the Aerospace Defense Command extended their sincere appreciation to Colonel Isbell for the contribution he has made to the Air Force mission. Colonel Isbell married Louise Pierson Isbell on August 7, 1943 and she preceded him in death on June 13, 1997. They had one son, James C. Isbell. He was a long time member of the First Baptist Church in Haskell. Colonel Isbell died on September 9, 2003 at his home in Haskell, Texas. He is survived by his wife, Pat, whom he married in 1998; one sister, Henrietta Sego of Abilene, Texas; one son and daughter- in-law, Jimmy and Sharon Isbell of Keller, Texas. He had two grandchildren, James R. Isbell of Euless, Texas and Cindy Lewis of Grapevine, Texas and two great-great grandchildren, Bradley and Emily Lewis. Graveside service are planned for Thursday, September 11 at Willow Cemetery in Haskell, Texas at 2:00 P.M. Honorary pallbearers will be Steve Alsabrook, Wesley Alsabrook, Robert Tribbey, Steven Foster, Ben McGee, David Davis, John Fouts, Michael Bowman, Raymond Rodela, Dr. Robert Herren, Raymond Andrada, and Larry Schonerstedt. The sun will shine another day, Because in our hearts you'll always stay. Thanks for the distinguished life you led. And may the prayers and words that are said, Bring comfort and peace as we say goodbye, To one special husband, dad, brother, and friend We salute you "Pop" as your journey ends.
