Donald R. Blocker M.D.
December 31, 1933 - October 16, 2017

Donald Russell Blocker, 83, passed away at home surrounded by the embrace and voices of his loved ones on Monday, October 16, 2017.

Don’s memory will be kept alive through his devoted wife of 40 years, Terry Barnett Blocker; his daughters Pam (Fred) Gibbs and Stephanie (Scott) Potter; his sons Mark and Russell Blocker; the grandchildren he adored, Paul and Eric Gibbs, Savannah and Sarah Potter, and Shaun and Shelby Blocker; his brother and friend Barry (Kay) Blocker; his nephews with their spouses and children; his cherished coffee and newspaper partner, Bernice Ned; many lifelong friends; patients; and countless others who will miss him dearly.

Don was delivered by a doctor wearing a tuxedo on New Year’s Eve 1933 in New Orleans, LA. Despite his grand entry, he was usually found in clothing better suited for working on his sailboat or playing tennis. He was happiest with a complicated project on his plate and there are pictures with whole groups smiling for the camera and Don crouched down getting his hands dirty. He would do anything for anyone at anytime. He was so eager to do things for himself that he even wrote his own obituary years ago. Unbelievably, there are more accolades and accomplishments achieved within his life than are listed but here we have what he wanted to say, typed as he wrote it by hand:

He has been a resident of Lake Charles since 1967 when he joined The Eye Clinic having been Assistant Professor at Tulane University School of Medicine and Director of the O’Brien Ocular Pathology Laboratory prior to that time.

He attended Texas A&M University, LSU School of Medicine, Tulane University School of Medicine, Emory University School of Medicine, and McNeese University. During these periods he was elected to Phi Kappa Phi, Alpha Omega Alpha, and Who’s Who in American Colleges and Universities. He has published in the Tulane Medical School Bulletin and is a Diplomate of the American Board of Ophthalmology.

He has served as Commander US Navy Medical Corps, President of the Board of Lake Charles Symphony, Commodore of the Lake Charles Yacht Club, President of the Calcasieu Parish Medical Society, Councillor of the Louisiana State Medical Society, Councillor of the Office of Governmental Affairs LSMS, and on the boards of the Louisiana Ophthalmological Association, Easter Seals, Calcasieu Kiwanis Club, Lake Charles Racquet Club, and Exceltech, a California corporation.

He has participated in ACTS productions, Galveston Bay Cruising Association, Texas Ocean Racing regattas, Sports Car Club of America rallies, Barber Shop Harmony Shows, Contraband Days Tennis Tournaments, and Lions Club Sight Foundation Medical Expedition to Central America.

Don’s funeral will be at 1 PM on Friday, October 20, 2017 at Johnson’s Funeral Home in Lake Charles. Rev. Weldon C. Bares of First United Methodist Church will officiate. Visitation will be on Thursday, October 19, 2017 from 5-8 PM and on Friday from 10 AM until the time of the service.

Don and his family would also like to extend their thanks and appreciation to Dr. Brian Clements, Dr. James Maze, and Dr. Ben Thompson together with their team of professionals for their excellent medical care and friendship. They are also grateful for the support of Southern Home Health, Brighton Bridge Hospice, and Wilda Talbert.

In lieu of flowers the family requests that a charitable donation to a worthy cause be made in his memory.
