David Nigel Mullen (February 19, 1963 - October 10, 2017)
David Nigel Mullen had many passions that he pursued throughout his life, including his family and friends, the Fighting Texas Aggie Corps of Cadets, history, hunting and shooting, and photography. David died unexpectedly on October 10, 2017 from a medical condition at his home at the age of 54. David is survived by his wife, Evelyn Mullen, his children, Tyler and Hannah, his mother Helen Elaine Worley, his adoptive father James Mullen, and his sisters Sian Mullen, Juliet Philpott, and Tammy Mullen. David was born in Nuneaton, England on February 19, 1963 to Helen Elaine Worley and David Douglas Evans. He was later adopted by his stepfather James Elgin Mullen. David moved often as he was growing up and lived at various times in England, Scotland, Belgium, Virginia, California and Texas where he graduated from Cy-Fair High School in 1981. David proudly became a United States Citizen in 1981 on Groundhog’s Day, which he remembered every year as an important life anniversary. David attended Texas A&M University where he met many life-long friends in the Corps of Cadets (Spider M-2) and his wife Evelyn Breiner Mullen. David and Evelyn were married in 1988 in Las Vegas, NV and moved to Dallas, TX shortly afterwards. David and Evelyn moved to Los Alamos, New Mexico in 1990, where they raised their children Tyler and Hannah. David first worked for the Los Alamos Monitor newspaper for nine years in advertising. Then, David went back to school at the University of New Mexico where he earned a Bachelor of University Studies in 1999, a Master of Arts in History in 2002 with a thesis on Ceran St. Vrain, and completed all of his coursework for a PhD in History. David worked as a graduate assistant at the University of New Mexico from 2002-2003 and for Los Alamos National Laboratory as a Graduate Research Assistant from 2003-2005. David became a full time employee at Los Alamos National Laboratory in 2005 where he was most recently working as a Security Specialist. During his work life, David received awards in advertising creativity, helped produce the script for a History Channel documentary on Christopher “Kit” Carson, and received many Los Alamos Achievement and Spot awards, but most importantly David connected with people. He was well known by friends and colleagues for his outgoing nature, and it was common for him to just stop to talk about work, family or life. Outside of work, David continued to pursue his interest in History, especially of the American West. David volunteered time through the Los Alamos Sportsman’s Club teaching Hunter Safety classes and trap shooting. He enjoyed hunting and shooting, and he had the opportunity to go hunting and shooting with both of his children. David became an avid photographer in recent years and could be found around town helping his friends with their photography or taking pictures of birds and the Los Alamos High School Marching Band. David enjoyed traveling with his family or to see friends, and he often combined his travel and his photography for some memorable adventures and pictures. He was often intrigued by trivia, offbeat images, or people he met along his way. Davis shared his interests freely and taught his family many things, including that Buckminster Fuller was a real person and that the answer to all of David’s trivia questions are: Ceran St. Vrain, the Beatles, 2, blue, or chocolate. The last words David would always share are “make good decisions” and “I love you.” At the time of his death, David was anticipating the future and all the love and joy it holds. He was a man of great discipline, integrity, and honor who was loved and will be missed by many. A viewing will be held at De Vargas Funeral Home at 623 N. Railroad Ave. Espanola, NM on Sunday October 15, 2017 from 4-6 pm. A funeral service will be held on Monday October 16, 2017 at 3 pm at the First United Methodist Church of Los Alamos at 715 Diamond Drive Los Alamos, NM. The funeral service will be followed by a reception with light snacks in the First United Methodist Church Fellowship Hall. A private interment will be scheduled at a later date.
