Memorial services for Ralph Edward "R.E." Merritt of Dime Box, Texas are scheduled for Sunday, October 15, 2017 at 1:00 PM at Phillips & Luckey Funeral Home in Giddings.

Ralph Edward "R.E." Merritt, 75, passed away Thursday, October 12, 2017 at his home near Dime Box, Texas after a lengthy battle with cancer.

R.E. was born January 12, 1942, in Artesia, New Mexico to Ralph David Merritt and Winnie (Hancock) Merritt, who preceded him in death, as well as his sister Jataun Durbin.

He is survived by five children, Eddie Merritt of Dime Box, Kristie and Brad Tooley of Canyon, Kellye Lane of Blanco, Curtis and Christi Ford of Austin, and Charlotte and Joe Allen of Boerne; grandchildren, Kristopher and Brooke Tooley of Waco, Shanna and Ty Jones of Lubbock, Tara and Chase Lenz of Franklin, Kenya Lane of Blanco, Brooks Lane of Blanco, Haylee and Keeley Ford of Austin, Cheyenne and Nathan Allen of Boerne; 10 great grandchildren, and one brother, David Merritt of Lamesa.

R.E. was known for his tenacious, stand-out abilities in athletics, business and hobbies.

He graduated from Andrews High in 1960 where he was a member of the State Championship Mustang Track team, which won the 440-yard dash and mile relay in 1959 and 1960. He went to Texas A&M where he continued to run track and earned his Bachelor of Business Administration degree. After college R.E. served a tour of duty with the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War and was awarded two Purple Hearts.

R.E. experienced great business success in Odessa, Austin and West Texas where he operated night clubs, restaurants and helped found a successful banking group. He also operated successful cattle and horse operations, including being the owner of the 1999 AQHA Horse of the Year “Playing Stylish.”

R.E. was a member of the 12th Man Foundation and Former Student Association at Texas A & M and of the AQHA. R.E. enjoyed playing poker, raising livestock, and watching college football and the news.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Hospice Brazos Valley or to a charity of one’s choice.
