Obituary sent by daughter.

Arthur Benjamin Haws, DVM
November 3, 1926-September 24, 2017

Arthur Benjamin Haws ‘48 was working at his beloved property in Dripping Springs, Texas, when he died suddenly on September 24, 2017. A memorial celebration will be conducted at a later date. For the date and time, please send an email to: Arthur1926Haws@gmail.com

Art was born on the family farm near La Feria, Texas, on November 3, 1926, to Clyde and Jeanette Jones Haws.

Art was an outstanding student and athlete at La Feria High School, graduating as the top male student in 1943. After attending Brownsville Junior College for a year, he left home to attend Texas A&M University. He competed as a high jumper and hurdler on the Texas A&M Track Team. Art was nationally ranked in high jump and won the Texas relays in that event in 1947. Art graduated as a member of the Texas A&M class of 1948 with his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree.

Art still had season tickets for football, basketball and track. He faithfully drove round trip from Austin to College Station (often more than once a week). The weekend he passed away he drove to Arlington to watch an Aggie victory with his A&M roommate (Dr. Don Farrell).

While serving in the U.S. Army Veterinary Medical Corps, Art met the love of his life at the Swift and Company plant in St. Joseph, Missouri. He married Mabel Lucille “Lynn” Alsfasser on Easter Sunday March 25, 1951. Art and Lynn lived in Salina, Kansas, where he practiced veterinary medicine until he bought a veterinary practice and moved to Austin in 1956. Art practiced at his clinics on South Lamar Boulevard for 40 years. He served as treasurer of the TVMA for multiple years.

Art and Lynn shared 22 happily married years until Lynn died entirely too young in 1973.

He remarried in 1974 to Marilynne Agnew, who was his loving companion until early 2017.

He personified Aggie core values. A man of few words, he lived his faith. He was an ambassador for A&M in the land of the orange bloods and served in multiple capacities with the Capital City A&M Club. He was active in civic and professional organizations, as well as churches in Austin over the years. He leaves behind a legacy of love that lives on through his family and friends.

Friends of all ages will remember his kindness and gentle spirit for years to come.

He was preceded in death by his parents and brother Ray Haws. His cherished sister June Haws Bell survives him.

He is survived by his children Karen Haws McNeely ’74 and husband Kyle ‘74, Barbara Haws Statum and husband Cyril ‘67, Rita Haws Plemmons ‘81 and husband Robert, Brian Haws ’86 and wife Laurie. Additionally, grandchildren Tara McNeely Clinton ‘02 and husband Larry, Justin Kyle McNeely ‘05, Leah Plemmons Stevenson ‘13 and husband Josiah ‘12, Camille Plemmons, Amanda Haws, and Ben Haws, as well as one great grandchild Aubrey Kyle Clinton survive him.

Memorials may be made to the Texas A&M Foundation, or a charity of your choice.

Condolences may be sent to Karen Haws McNeely ’74. 5159 Stonewater Loop, College Station, TX 77845. 832.919.5819
