HE WOODLANDS - Raymond Stewart Watson, 94, passed away at home in The Woodlands on Friday, September 29, 2017.

Raymond was born February 5, 1923 in Perris, Cali. He lived in Benbrook, Fort Worth, Sherman, Jacksonville, Ill., Fresno, Cali., and Houston. He was a student at Texas A&M until his junior year when he was inducted in the Army at Camp Beauregard, LA, March of 1943. In June of 1943 Raymond was sent to Fort Sam Houston, there he went thru a month of basic training under the leadership of a "two star general", he then went through Officers Candidate School at Edgewood Arsonal, Maryland and finished on October 30, 1943, he was given a commision of Second Lt. CWS, his temporary assignment was at Gaston, Alabama. From Nov. to Dec. 1943 Raymond was assigned to the Rocky Mountain Arsenal, Denver, CO, a chemical plant that produced agents for chemical warfare, he then was assigned to the Transportation Corp.on Jan. 1944 at Camp Gordon, in Johnson, Florida, he was a Marine Engineer until May 1944 and Harbor Craft unit training for amphibious landing. Raymond was sent overseas with the Harbor Craft unit in May 1944 where he was Stationed at South Hampton, England and the Isle of Wight until Jan. 1945. Raymond applied for a transfer to either a Mortar Bn. in Chemical Warfare Service or paratroop training, he was tranferred into Company 'C' 87 Chemical Mortar Bn. on Jan. 1945 assigned as a forward observer directing mortar fire. The unit was attached to the First Army, Seventh Corp in the vicinity of Aachen. The unit operated by assigning a platoon to an attacking battalion to furnish support with both high explosives and smoke screen, especially when crossing rivers. Raymond was a 1st Lieutenant in the Army and fought in the, Battle of the Bulge in WWII. He was discharged March 1946, was in reserves until 1953. Raymond graduated from Texas A&M, August 1946 with a degree in Chemical Engineering.
Raymond married Elaine Townes in November 21, 1946. He received numerous awards, including Outstanding Young Man of the Year in Illinois, 1959 and Mayor of Jacksonville, Illinois 1960-1963. He worked for Mrs. Tuckers/Anderson Clayton Foods for 40 years working up to Vice President of Manufacturing. Then he worked for Watson, Inc. until 2002 when he retired at age 79. Raymond was instrumental in starting Cornerstone Assistance Network www.canetwork.org in Fort Worth and was a deacon at North Richland Hills Baptist Church.
Raymond was preceded by his wife, Elaine; brother, Paul; and sister, Margie.
Survivors: Sister, Cheryl Chanslor , 92, of Dallas; daughters, Karen Elaine Gregg and husband Don R. of Kyle , Kathy Lynn Allison and husband, D. Crawford, of Waco and Konnie Watson Andrews and husband, D. Craig of Chama, N.M.; five grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren
