John Sandhop

August 24, 1935 - September 2, 2017
Born in Montalba, TX
Resided in Baytown, TX

John Riley Sandhop passed away at home on September 2, 2017 at the age of 82. He was born near the East Texas community of Montalba in Anderson County on August 24, 1935.

He graduated from Palestine High School, Palestine, Texas, Texas A&M University Class of ’57, and The University of Texas Law School.

John served three years in the USAF as a Captain in the Judge Advocate General office CAFB, Columbus, Mississippi.

He moved to Baytown, Texas in 1963 and practiced law in the Reid, Strickland and Gillette firm for 45 years.

He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Marilyn Dowell Sandhop, and three sons, John (Mona), Stephen (Dee), and David (Kelly). Also surviving are six grandchildren: Katherine, Madeline, Emma (Morgan) Bellmor, Lee, Stephen, and Riley. He is also survived by his niece, Susanne Hilou.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Edwin George Sandhop and Inez Hendrix Sandhop; sister, Eddie Lou Sandhop Michel and brother, Ed.

John frequently said “Baytown has been so good to me.” Our community can say that he was good to it. He was an active member of Grace United Methodist Church for 54 years. He was also active in the Baytown Chamber of Commerce, Baytown Opportunity School, Bay Area Water Authority, and The Baytown Rotary Club with 50 years of perfect attendance.

His family will receive friends at Navarre Funeral Home on Friday, September 8, 2017, beginning at 9:00 a.m., with a memorial service to follow at 10:00 a.m. with Pastor John Newsome officiating. There will be a family burial at Holly Springs Cemetery, Montalba, Texas, on Sunday, September 10, 2017 at 2:30 p.m.

In lieu of usual remembrances, contributions may be made to Cedar Bayou Grace Methodist Church or The Rotary Club of Baytown.
