Robert C. Sawyer, age 84, passed away in his home Monday, August 21, 2017, after a prolonged battle with Alzheimer’s Disease. Visitation will be Thursday, August 24, 2017 from 6:00-8:00 at Harrell’s Funeral Home 4435 Frontier Trails, Austin, Texas. Funeral services for Bob will be held Friday, August 25, 2017 at 10:00 am at Hyde Park Baptist Church. Burial will be Monday, August 28, 2017 at Central Texas Veterans Cemetery in Killeen, Texas.
He was born in Donaldsonville, Georgia on August 15, 1933 to Carlton and Jeanette Sawyer. He moved with brothers, Jack and Don, along with their parents to Houston, Texas where he graduated from Reagan High School in 1951. After graduation, he attended Texas A&M College. While home on summer break, he met the love of his life, Nan Andrews, while working at American General Life Insurance Company. After a long-distance courtship, they married on May 28, 1954 and returned to College Station to enjoy the comforts of married student housing while Bob worked to become a graduate of the Fighting Texas Aggie class of 1955. After graduation, he received his commission into the US Air Force as Second Lt. During his time on active duty, Bob served in strategic air command flying KC97 midair refuelers. After completing his time of service, Bob moved his growing family to Houston, Texas where he entered the civil service as a federal agent with the Criminal Investigation Division of the IRS. He was eventually promoted to chief of CID which moved him to Austin, Texas. Simultaneously, Bob served in the USAF Reserves in the Office of Special Investigations. He served his country honorably for 28 years and retired as a Lt. Col. After retiring from federal service, Bob went on to assist Bob Bullock in forming the Criminal Investigations Division for the State Comptroller’s Office. After 5 years of service, Bob finally retired to a life of RV-ing with Nan. During his early retirement years, Bob managed to serve as pastor to two different Colorado churches in Saguache and Creed.
Robert Sawyer is survived by his wife of 63 years, Nan Andrews Sawyer, daughters Jan Davis (spouse Tim), Susan Schobel (spouse Oscar), Cari Allen (spouse Garrett), 10 grandchildren, and 15 and counting great-grandchildren. He is also survived by 2 brothers, Jack Sawyer of Conroe and Don Sawyer of Houston.
One thing you can say about Bob us that he loved the Lord with all his heart, soul and mind.
