Donald Garrett
March 10, 1935 ~ July 12, 2017 (age 82)

Donald Dean Garrett, 82, passed away on Wednesday, July 12, 2017.
Donald was born to Henry and LaRue Garrett in Rosebud, Texas on March 10, 1935. Donald attended Bryan public schools. He played football in 1953 at Stephen F. Austin High School. Donald entered Texas A&M in 1953 and graduated in 1958 with a B.S. in Civil Engineering. He worked at the Texas Highway Department in the interstate design department as an assistant resident engineer. Don also proudly served his country in the U.S. Army Reserve and retired after twenty years of service.
In 1958 Don married the love of his life, Florine Plagens. They were blessed with two children: Jeffrey Garrett (and wife Debra, of Montgomery) and Vanessa Jackson (and husband Robert Lee, of Bryan). In 1974 Donald went into business as a professional engineer and land surveyor. He was the owner of Garrett Engineering.
Don was a huge Aggie fan. He followed all Aggie sports and was a season ticket holder for Aggie football since 1972. He was president of the Brazos Beagle Club for decades and was one of the most recognized beaglers in the state. Hunting and fishing also was a huge source of enjoyment for Don. He had deer leases all over the state of Texas. He hunted many times with his father, Henry, and his son, Jeff. He harvested one of the biggest whitetail bucks in the state of Texas, placing second and third in two statewide contests. He played in a weekly domino club. Don was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Bryan and the Men’s Bible Class.
Don is preceded in death by his beloved wife of 58 years, Florine Garrett. He is survived by his children and their spouses: Jeff and wife Debra, Vanessa and husband Robert Lee. He will be greatly missed by his four grandchildren. Collin and Rylee Garrett; Parker and Garrett Jackson, and two step grandchildren, Syvanna and Jakob Lee. Don also leaves behind his siblings: Thomas Garrett and wife Stephenie of California, Betty Rhea of College Station, Margaret Evins and husband Fred of Austin, and a host of nieces and nephews.
