LEON WEST

Joseph Leon West, age 71, passed away on May 31, 2017 in Round Rock, Texas. Leon was born on September 15, 1945 to Charlie and Ruby Champion West in Freeport, Texas.

He graduated from Columbia High School in West Columbia and then graduated from Texas A&M University, class of 1968.

He was ever faithful to all Aggie sports teams, unless the season got too painful. Completely dedicated to his family and was the best Opa any kid could ever have. He was always good for a lift to the airport. His heart and his pockets were always open; he would give you his last dollar.

Leon lived out his faith in Christ by being a humble servant here on earth. He loved his Sunday School class and singing in the choir. Listening to music was a favorite pastime.

There was always an impressive collection of change and keys in his pockets, hence the need for suspenders to hold his pants up.

We would make fun of him for his mismatched sayings, like “Put that in your hat and smoke it.” and “There was a turtleneck at the intersection.” He would laugh with us.

If you walked into the room he was the one who genuinely wanted to hear what you had to say.

Leon is preceded in death by his parents and son Dustin. He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Karen Burke West; son Blake and daughter-in-law Michelle of Austin; daughter-in-law Ede West McAbee and son-in-law Jay McAbee of College Station; grandchildren Miriam, Raimie, Sophie, Collier and Esme; and brothers Allen and Carlos West of Wild Peach.

The family will have a private service in Yoakum on Saturday. In lieu of flowers, donations in Leon’s memory may be made to First Baptist Church of Brazoria Benevolence Fund, PO Box 2007, Brazoria, Texas 77422.
