Edward Hampton Ellis
WEST HARTFORD, CONN. - Edward Hampton Ellis, 85, of West Hartford, Conn., formerly of Berlin, Conn., beloved husband of Marjorie (Wolfe) Ellis, and widower of Hope DeMore Ellis, died Friday at the Hospital of Central Connecticut, New Britain. Born in Putnam, Conn., he was a retired regular Army Lt. Colonel in the Corps of Engineers for over 23 years, having served in the European and Pacific Theatres in WWII, and in Korea and Vietnam. After serving as Combat Engineer Battalion Commander, Civil Works Officer, Flood Control Officer, and Minuteman Missile Construction Officer and Engineer for France, Italy, and Germany maintenance and new work construction, Colonel Ellis retired on July 1, 1966. He served the New Britain Connecticut Board of Education as a mathematics and science teacher, Assistant Principal, and Principal of New Britain High School for some 19 years. He was a civil engineer with a Master's degree in science, treasurer and committeeman of the Worthington Fire District in Berlin for 10 years, president of the Maple Cemetery Association for over 15 years, an active member and deacon of Kensington Congregational Church, where he also served on the minister search committee, and the Christian Education Committee, having previously served as deacon, and chairman of the Christian Education Committee at Berlin Congregational Church. Colonel Ellis was past president of the Berlin Kiwanis Club, where he was a member for over 35 years, a Life Member of Berlin V.F.W. Post #10732, where he was Senior Vice-commander, and also a member of Circus Fans of America for over 35 years, having served as National Director of District 2 (Massachusetts, Connecticut, and Rhode Island), and past president of Bluch Landolf - Fr. Jack Toner Tent #24, CFA, and appeared in five different traveling circuses: Royal Wild West Circus (seven years), King Bros. Circus (one year), Sells and Grey Circus (one year), Clyde Beatty – Cole Bros. Circus, and Roberts Bros. Circus (over 20 years). Active as Jo-Jo the Clown for over 30 years, he brought circuses to Berlin in 1976, 1994, 1995, 1997, 1999, and 2001. He was a Cub master for the Boy Scouts of America in Fox Hill, Va., and Great Falls, Mont. In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Edward and Geri Ellis of Lanexa, Va., and Colonel (retired) Andrew and Judy Ellis of Bel Air, Md.; two sisters-in-law, Dolores Ellis of East Hartford, Conn., and Pat Ellis of Waynesville, N.C.; three stepdaughters, Karen Bundy and her husband, Jim, of New Hope, Pa., Ann Hunter and her husband, Robert, of Henniker, N.H., and Sarah Emmons and her husband, Gary, of Winchester, Conn.; one stepson, John Dunwoody and his wife, Roxanne, of Vernon, Conn.; 17 grandchildren, Erin, Elizabeth, Dorothy, and Andrew Ellis, James, Susan, Matthew, and Sarah Kate Bundy, Braden, Adam, Whitney, and Simon Hunter, Amy and Robert Emmons, and Samuel, Sumiko, and Annaliese Dunwoody; and six great-grandchildren, Audrey, Adam, James, Josephine, Amelia and Max. He was predeceased by two brothers, James S. Ellis and William F. Ellis. Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 11 a.m. directly at Kensington Congregational Church, 312 Percival Ave., Kensington, Conn. Burial in Maple Cemetery, Berlin, will be at the convenience of the family. Friends and relatives are invited to call at Porter's Funeral Home, 111 Chamberlain Highway in Kensington, Conn., on Monday from 5 to 8 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to V.F.W.
