Thomas B. Owen, Jr.

Memorial services for Dr. Thomas B. Owen, Jr., 91, of Lufkin will be held Tuesday, May 16, 2017 at 3:30 p.m. in the PineCrest Retirement Community Chapel with Dr. Brian Wiggins, of First Presbyterian Church of Lufkin, officiating, with a reception immediately following. Private interment will be in the Mt. Hope Cemetery in Wells.

Dr. Owen was born February 2, 1926 at the home of his grandfather, Henry Bell, in Taft, Texas. He was the first child born to Alta Bell Owen and Thomas B. Owen, Sr. Thomas grew up on the family farm and graduated from Sinton High School in 1943. The day after high school graduation, Thomas caught the train to College Station to enroll in Texas A&M College for summer school. He served in the United States Army Air Corps from August 1944 until October 1945 and returned to A&M where he graduated in June 1949 with a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine Degree. Before graduation, he and Dorothy Gene Moore of Huntsville, Texas were married April 14, 1949 in the First Methodist Church in Huntsville and after graduation moved to Sinton, Texas where Dr. Owen farmed, had his Veterinary Practice, and managed Owen Farm Supply.

In August 1963 Dr. Owen moved his family to Lufkin, Texas after taking a position with the U.S. Department of Agriculture as a Veterinarian in the Safety and Inspection Division. After 25 years of service he retired in 1986. Dr. Owen enjoyed hunting, bass fishing and the last 20 years of his active life enjoyed playing golf. Tom was active for many years in the Lufkin Bass Club, Lufkin Youth Baseball Association, and the Boy Scouts of America organization serving as the Scoutmaster of Troop 140 for First Presbyterian Church and on the Board of Review. He also served on the Board of Directors of Lufkin Country Club for many years. All of his married life he was active in the Presbyterian Church serving as an Elder and on many committees. In retirement, Tom enjoyed traveling and volunteering with Kurth Memorial Library, First Presbyterian Church, Meals on Wheels, Christian Information and Service Center, Adult Learning Center and spending quality time with his grandchildren. Tom was a devoted son, husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and brother; truly a family man.

Survivors include his wife of 68 years, Dorothy Moore Owen; sons and spouses, Thomas A. Owen and Susan of College Station, John W. Owen and Martha of Lufkin; daughter and spouse, Jean Owen East and Michael of Lufkin; grandsons, Brent Owen and wife Lindsay of Cypress, Captain Jeffrey Owen and wife Veronica of Destin, Florida; granddaughters, Caralia Owen Bray and husband Richard of Bryan, Emily East and Allie East of Lufkin; great-grandchildren, Jackson Owen and Andrew Owen of Cypress, Juliana Owen of Destin, Florida and Kassidy Bray of Bryan; and sister-in-law Ethel Owen of South Carolina.

Dr. Owen was preceded in death by his parents; and siblings and spouses, Robert G. Owen and wife Virginia, Opal O. Younts and husband Bobby Ray Younts, and Louis Owen.

Memorial contributions may be made to First Presbyterian Church of Lufkin, 607 Janeway Avenue, Lufkin, Texas 75904 or the Alzheimer’s Association, 304 N. Raguet, Suite C, Lufkin, Texas 75904.
