Reverend Howard Franklin Mims Childers
May 11, 1933 - February 23, 2017

Reverend Howard Franklin Mims Childers died at home on Thursday, February 23, at the age of 83. He was born in San Antonio, Texas on May 11, 1933, to William Hubert Childers and Leticia Elizabeth Childers. He grew up in Texas, attended Texas A&M University on a football scholarship, and graduated as a Distinguished Military Student in January, 1956. Following college, he served in the Army and was stationed in Korea.
Reverend Childers was called to the pastoral ministry while in college, and following his time in the service, attended Princeton Theological Seminary. Upon graduation, he served as pastor of churches in Dallas, Texas; Littleton, Colorado; Los Angeles, California; Yakima, Washington; and Amarillo, Texas.
He married Sondra Lee Johnson in 1959, and they had three sons, Sam, Ben, and Jake. Reverend Childers loved the Rocky Mountains, reading, fly-fishing, and photography. He retired from his home church in Amarillo, Texas, in 1998, and moved to Colorado, where he lived until he passed away.
Reverend Childers is survived by his wife of 58 years, Sondra, their three sons, Samuel Howard of Denver, Colorado, Benjamin Clay of Kirkland, Washington, and Jacob Andrew of Austin, Texas, two daughters-in-law, Christiana Shoop Childers and Courtney Smith Childers, granddaughters Gillian Margaret Childers and Ruth Anne Childers of Kirkland, Washington, and grandsons Reid McGibbon Childers and Andrew Clifton Mims Childers of Austin, Texas.
A Memorial Service will be held at First Presbyterian Church, Fort Collins, Colorado, on Saturday, March 4 at 11:00 a.m.
