Calvin (Cal) Davis Campbell
June 21, 1937 – January 14, 2017
Cal Campbell passed away peacefully on Saturday, January 14, at VITAS Hospice in Fort Worth. He was 79 years old.
He was born in Phoenix, Arizona to Calvin Davis Campbell, Sr. and Helene Eugenia (Anderson) Campbell. Six months later, Cal’s father was killed in a car accident, and Cal moved to Fort Worth to live with his aunt and uncle, Marguerite and I.E. McWhirter. He graduated from North Side High School in 1955.
Cal earned a Bachelor of Science and Master of Science in Electrical Engineering from Texas A&M University. He remained a devoted, enthusiastic supporter of A&M, especially the football program, throughout his life.
After college, Cal served in the US Air Force, stationed in Sunnyvale, California. He met and married Sandy Skendzel there, and they returned to Fort Worth following his discharge from the military. Cal went to work for General Dynamics (now Lockheed Martin) and remained there until his retirement in 1999.
Cal and Sandy raised two daughters, Ginger (born 1966) and Penny (born 1969). He proudly attended all of their school and church activities, and was a source of strength and support for them until his death. Cal and Sandy divorced in 1986.
Cal led a very active life and loved to socialize. He was a devoted runner, and in later years a walker, who was a long-time participant in the Cowtown Marathon and other local races. He volunteered with First United Methodist Church and Habitat for Humanity, and made sure that the homeless cats in his neighborhood were well fed. Cal was a huge fan of music, attending concerts on a regular basis – some of his favorites were the Concerts in the Garden series, Bernadette Peters, and Tony Bennett.
Perhaps Cal’s greatest legacy is Anderson Campbell Park, named for his parents. This park was created when Cal donated a small farm that had been in his family for nearly 100 years to the City of Fort Worth. He was motivated to give this gift by his desire to keep the property free from development, and to share a place that had been so special to his family with all families in Fort Worth.
Survivors include daughter Ginger and her husband Jeff Humber, daughter Penny and her husband Frederick Colby, granddaughter Jylian Humber, and his ex-wife Sandy Smith who remained a close friend and part of the family after their divorce.
