Mr. Robert Chad Abernathy
August 25, 1941 - November 24, 2016
Funeral services for Mr. Robert Chad Abernathy, 75, of Carthage, Texas will be 10:00 a.m., Monday, November 28, 2016 at the Hawthorn Funeral Home Chapel with Dr. Kirby Hill officiating. Burial will follow at 3:00 p.m. at the Hughes Springs Cemetery in Hughes
Springs, Texas under the direction of Hawthorn Funeral Home. Visitation with the family will be 6-8:00 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Mr. Abernathy passed away November 24, 2016 at his home in Carthage.
Mr. Robert Chad Abernathy was born August 25, 1941 in Tylertown, Mississippi. He was the oldest of two boys born to William Dolphus “W.D.” and Doris Nell Smith Abernathy. Mr. Abernathy graduated from Hughes Springs High School with the class of 1959, later
graduating from Kilgore Jr. College in 1961 and then graduated from Texas A&M University in 1965. Chad married Jane Leslie “Janie” Mahoney on May 26, 1974 and together they celebrated 40 years until she preceded him in death on January 30, 2015. Mr. Abernathy
worked as an engineer for Texas Utilities and the Texas Highway Department. Chad was a longtime member of Southside Baptist Church, a volunteer and supporter of Mission Carthage and a member of the Carthage Gideon Camp where he served as treasurer. He is also
preceded in death by his parents and a granddaughter, Mary Jane Drillette.
Mr. Abernathy is survived by his children, Sarah Shelton and husband Chris of Longview, Randy Abernathy and wife Karen of Mansfield, Kristi Tosh and husband Randy of Mt. Pleasant, Amy Drillette and husband Scott of Brock, Chip Abernathy and wife Jacque of The
Woodlands, Megan Eshbaugh and husband Joel of Lebanon, New Hampshire: brother, Phil Abernathy and wife Katy of Jacksonville, Florida; fifteen grandchildren; seven great grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and a host of friends.
Serving as pallbearers will be his grandsons, Bo McGee, Will Abernathy, Thomas Abernathy, Jack Hardin, Nick Hardin, Zach Drillette, Ethan Eshbaugh and Max Abernathy. Honorary pallbearer will be Jack Abernathy.
If desired, the family requests that donations be made in Mr. Abernathy’s name to Mission Carthage or the Carthage Gideon Camp.
