Max M. Levy

Max M. Levy passed away peacefully at the age of 90 on October 12, 2016.
He is survived by his wife, Melissa, a daughter, Elizabeth Gula (Jerry), a stepson, Don DeFord (Pamela), and four grandchildren, Reid DeFord (Lindsay), Madelyn DeFord, Max Gula, and Megan Gula.
Max was born in Lake Charles, LA on February 1, 1926, the only child of Max M. Levy and Mathilde Kaufman, and raised in Galveston, TX. He attended the Galveston public schools. Upon graduating from high school, he went to work at a dry dock as an electrician's helper. In June 1943, he entered Texas A&M College but his studies there were interrupted when he was drafted into the Army. He served in the Pacific during WWII and achieved the rank of Technician 4th Class. Upon leaving the Army with an Honorable Discharge, he reenrolled in Texas A&M under the GI Bill of Rights and graduated in 1949 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering.
His engineering career began in Houston, TX where he held several positions in several natural gas pipeline companies including a Columbia Gas System subsidiary. At the time, he was considered to be an expert in the design, construction and operation of natural gas pipeline compressor stations. Upon his transfer to Columbia's Wilmington, DE head office, he was placed in charge of the design, construction and operation of the Cove Point, MD liquefied natural gas importing terminal. In addition, he was in charge of the operation of a synthetic natural gas plant in Green Springs, OH. He also headed Columbia's Strategic Planning Department. Later, he was elected a Senior Vice President and to the presidency of several of Columbia's subsidiaries.
Upon his retirement in 1991, Max continued to live in Wilmington and established a consulting office providing engineering services to a number of firms throughout the U.S. In 2010, Melissa and Max built an in-law suite at their daughter and son-in-law's home in New London Township, PA.
Funeral Services will be held at 11AM on Saturday, October 29 at Red Clay Creek Presbyterian Church, 500 McKennan's Church Road, Wilmington, DE 19808.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials to Max's memory can be made to either the Disabled American Veterans (www.dav.org) or Boy Scouts of America (www.scouting.org).
