Charles Alfred Royalty
Charles (Charlie) Royalty, 87, of Georgetown, TX, passed away October 12 in Sherman, TX. Charlie was born December 12, 1928, in Velasco, TX, to James and Estelle Royalty. He graduated from Freeport High in 1947 where he excelled in track and football. Charlie then attended Texas A&M where he was a 3-year letterman in football. As a two-way starter, Charlie played halfback, defensive back, and punt returner. Charlie still has A&M's 3rd longest punt return of 93 yards he set against Villanova in 1948. One of his favorite memories was playing the entire game against Texas on Thanksgiving 1948, a 14-14 tie. Upon graduating from Texas A&M in 1951, Charlie was stationed in Germany for 2 years with the US Air Force. In 1953, Charlie embarked on what would turn out to be a very successful career with Dow Chemical, retiring in 1986. Charlie was involved in Dow's early polyethylene production, served a foreign stint with Asahi-Dow in Tokyo, Japan, and finished his career as head of Dow's Technology Center in Midland, MI.
Charlie led a very active 30 years of retirement. Charlie and Leta enjoyed their early retirement years living on Tierra Linda Ranch outside of Kerrville, TX. They then moved to golf course living in Sun City (Georgetown). Each summer, Charlie loved spending time at his cabin in South Fork, CO, especially sharing time with his brother Max who owns the cabin adjacent to Charlie's. The two of them were a menacing duo as they stalked any trout that dared venture past them in the South Fork of the Rio Grande! Charlie was a lifelong golfer….and recorded an ace as witnessed by Robert in MI. Charlie looked forward to visiting his A&M teammates during the annual spring game and when attending A&M football games. Charlie treasured those lifelong relationships that were forged on the gridiron back in the late 40's.
Charlie was preceded in death by his wife Leta of 36 years, sons Charlie and David Royalty, step-son Steve Gibson, and brother Jimmy Royalty. Charlie was also preceded in death by Carol (Richards) Royalty, the mother of their five children. He is survived by daughter Debby (Bobby) Burnham of Baytown, TX, son Randy (Jamie) Royalty of Charlotte, MI, son Robert (Allison) Royalty of Van Alstyne, TX, stepson, Keith Gibson of Dallas, brother, Dr. Max (Alice) Royalty of Lake Jackson and sister-in-law Sharlene (Jimmy) Royalty. He is also survived by grandchildren Jason and Brian Burnham, Beth (Justin) Meeks, TJ Royalty, Shawn and Morgan Gibson. Charlie also shared a special relationship with Jettie Sherrier of Georgetown. The family wishes to thank the staff of Brookdale Willows and Guardian Hospice in Sherman for the loving care they provided Charlie over this past year. A memorial service officiated by Rev. Raegan Seaton is scheduled Tuesday, October 18, at 1:00 PM at Restwood Memorial Cemetery Chapel, 1038 W Plantation Dr., Clute, TX. Immediately following will be Interment at Restwood Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts can be made to Wellspring UMC, 6200 Williams Dr., Georgetown, TX, 78633.
