Dr. Arthur G. Wright M.D.

Dr. Wright was born January 15, 1929, to A.G. Wright Sr., and Viola Louise Byrne Wright in El Paso, Texas and died in San Antonio, Texas September 13, 2016. Dr. Wright was 87 years old.

He grew up in El Paso, after and graduating from El Paso High School in 1945, he attended Texas A&M in College Station and graduated with a degree in Zoology and a commission as a 2nd Lt. in the Army Security Agency. As a senior ROTC CADET at A&M, he was a Lt. Colonel in command of the 2nd battalion of the composite regiment in the corps of cadets. Dr. Wright competed as a middle weight boxer as an Aggie, with an overall record of 13 wins and loss.

He was admitted to U.T. Medical Branch Galveston in 1949 and graduated as an M.D. in 1953. Dr. Wright spent the next 3 years as a regimental surgeon in the U.S. Army during the Korean conflict. Upon discharge in 1956, he completed his Family Practice Residency at the Halifax District Hospital9 in Daytona Beach, Florida. In July 1958 Dr. Wright joined the Smith Clinic in Corpus Christi, Texas, where he became acquainted with Dr. George Hudson. Dr. Hudson and Dr. Wright formed the Hudson and Wright Clinic the following year.

While serving as the Chief of Family Medicine at Spohn Hospital in 1970, Dr. Wright took over the supervision of Emergency Services at Spohn and continued as the Chief of Emergency Services from 1970 till 2002. In 1993 Dr. Wright served as President of the Medical Staff of Spohn Hospital and as a member of the Board of Directors of the Spohn Hospital System (during the term of Sister Kathleen Coughlin, his 'heroine') In 2002 Dr. Wright was inducted along with his friend Dr. Pat Moran as the 12th and 13th member of Spohn Hospitals distinguished physician group for outstanding leadership.

Dr. Wright retired in 2004 after the death of his wife of 52 yean Delores Crowell Wright.

He was also preceded in death by his parents, A.G. Wright Sr., and Louise Wright, his step brother, Dr. Wm. D. Starnes, sisters, Dr. Joan Wright Goodman and Jacqueline Clara Wright.

In 2006 Dr. Wright married his long time friend and dive partner, Gigi Hunnicutt of Corpus Christi, Texas, formerly of Darmstadt, Germany.

He is survived by his wife, Gigi, his daughter, Pamela Wright Yacovone (Fran), John Wright (Carol) stepson, Dr. Richard Campbell (Linda) grandchildren: Lt. James Arthur Wende (Brittney) Lt. Patrick Ryan Wende, Melissa Hoelscher (Joey) Curt Campbell, (Katey) Crystal Campbell and Jessie Wright. Dr. Wright is also survived by Dr. Charles Goodman (husband of Joan) his nephew, H. Nick Goodman, niece, Didi Goodman Bums (John); and eight great-grandchildren. Gigi's daughter, Christie had a special place in his heart. Last but not least his very good friends Dr. Alex Kirgis of Muench en, Germany and Ralph Giovanone, P .A. (Barbara) of Corpus Christi, Texas.

Dr. Wright and his wife Gigi have expressed their desire to be cremated upon each of their deaths. After both cremations they would like for their relatives and friends to gather at the 'Naked Iguana Saloon' at Point Moreno, Cozumel, Mexico to drink a toast to them and scatter their combined ashes in the Caribbean Sea, where they spent so many happy hours scuba diving. (Art and Gigi will pay for the first round of drinks for all attendees.) If everything goes as planned, Dr. Campbell and others will play and sing some of Art's and Gigi's favorite music (Quando calienta el sol', 'Cuando tu no estas,' 'Guantanamera,' etc. Dr. Wright requested that his granddaughter Melissa play her version of 'Baker Street' on her sal (Amazing Grace will not be played, however, Neil Diamond's 'Pretty Amazing Grace' would be fine.)

After the ceremonies at Point Moreno, Art and Gigi suggest dancing and Margaritas at Sao Francisco Beach and dining at Morgan's or Pepe's. Nick Goodman, Christie Clark and Pamela Yacovone will make the arrangements. After Art's and Gigi's ultimate demise, friends and loved ones will be contacted regarding the celebration.
