Dr. Robert E. Ables
Mayor of Burleson, Texas
1976-1982
Robert Ables graduated from the Fort Worth public schools. He then attended Arlington State College before graduating
from Texas A&M University with a doctor of veterinary medicine degree. As a United States Air Force officer, Dr. Ables was base veterinarian at McConnell Air Force
Base in Wichita, Kan.
In 1962 after his military duty ended, an Aggie friend, Dr. Harold Putnam, asked Ables to return to Texas and join him as partner in the Burleson Animal Hospital in Burleson, Texas. Ables and Putnam were partners until 1990.
Significant accomplishments for the City during the terms of Mayor Ables were the building of Chisenhall Park and the Community Center with an outdoor swimming pool; remodeling of City Hall with a new council chamber; and construction of North Renfro Street
from McAlister Road to FM 731 in Crowley. The Burleson Public Library was moved from the Renfro-Clark home to 216 S.W. Johnson Ave. in 1979. The first cable television franchise was granted.
Dr. Ables is now a consultant to other veterinarians advising them of methods to increase the value of their veterinary practice and practice valuations.
According to Burleson: the First 100 Years, the City slogan, FOR THE GOOD LIFE, was adopted in 1975.
