September 1, 1926 - August 3, 2016
Henry (Hank) Fuqua passed away at age 89 in his home in Centennial.
Hank is survived by daughter Karen Dawson (John) of Centennial, grandchildren Tegan Denison (Ira) of Aurora, Justin Dawson (Alyssa) of Ellis, Kansas and Ian Dawson of Centennial. Two great granddaughters, Amelia and Keira Denison, great grandson, Jonas Dawson, his niece, Kim Marsh and family, and nephew, Keith Porter and family. Also survived by Martine Jansen, his dear friend the last 16 years.
Hank was preceded in death by his parents Henry and Rowena Fuqua, wife Barbara Fuqua (7/1993), and sister Shirley Porter (11/2000), and grandson Shawn Dawson (5/2014).
Born in Houston, Texas to Henry and Rowena Fuqua, the family later moved to Dallas, Texas. There he grew up with his younger sister Shirley. He enjoyed playing with neighborhood friends and had a paper route delivering newspapers on his bike.
After high school he started at Texas A&M at College Station, attending for two quarters. He then left school to serve in the Navy during World War II as Motor Machinists Mate Third Class in the Pacific Front (Philippines). After his service in the Navy he returned to Texas A&M, graduating in June 1950 with a degree in Geology. He attended using the GI bill and also worked in the school cafeteria to pay for his meals. He was always proud to be an Aggie, and loved to watch the Texas A&M football games.
After graduating from college, Hank worked in the “oil patch” in Kansas. He traveled to various parts of rural Kansas sitting on wells. In the mid-1950’s he worked for Sinclair Oil, later Vickers Petroleum and was transferred and moved to Littleton, Colorado in 1959. During the 60’s he worked as the administrative engineer for Tipton and Kalmbach, where he was responsible for personnel employment among other tasks.
In 1971 he started working for McCall, Ellingson, & Morrill (MEM), Inc., a consulting engineering firm in Denver where he was the staff geologist, later becoming the business manager and a partner in the firm.
Hank was a member of the Association of Professional Geological Scientists, the Association of Engineering Geologists, and the Consulting Engineers Council of Colorado, among others. In 1990 MEM was sold to KLH Engineering, Hank retired from KLH in 1992. He continued on in the partnership, dealing with the business of taking care of the building they owned.
He met Barbara Davis in Wichita, KS at Cardinal Geophysical Co., the company they both worked for.
She was a draftswomen working there. They were married on April 3rd, 1954. A year later their daughter Karen was born.
Living in Colorado, Hank and Barbara loved taking drives to the mountains; they especially enjoyed Vail. He also LOVED his Denver Broncos! He liked to wager with his sister Shirley when the Broncos played against the Dallas Cowboys. In later years he enjoyed watching them with his grandsons Shawn and Ian. He was so happy that the Broncos won the 2016 Super Bowl for him, and that the last season he saw was the best!
From the early 80’s to 1993 when Barbara passed away, Hank took loving care of her after she had several strokes. Even when she was in a wheelchair she was able to stay in their home because of the care he gave. They still enjoyed going out to dinner and taking drives to the mountains.
Hank and his family joined Grace Presbyterian Church in the 6o’s, where he served as Financial Secretary and as Treasurer from 1964-1969. After time away from the church he rejoined Grace 1996 after coming to granddaughters Tegan’s confirmation. He soon became involved again, serving as Clerk of Session from 2000-2007, as well as other duties. In 2012 he joined New Hope Presbyterian in Castle Rock.
While at Grace he joined Keenagers, a group of active adults that enjoyed going on outings and meals together. There he met Martine Jansen in 2000. Hank and Martine spent 16 years together, going on trips, cruises, and drives to the mountains. They especially liked to go to Georgetown, and hadn’t been able to for a few years, but just two weeks before his passing, they took a wonderful drive there. They also loved to get together with friends, playing games and eating out. They were always busy going to plays and concerts also, slowing down a little this last year, but still active. His favorite thing though was when he and Martine would get together and play dominoes, which he taught her, and they had a fierce rivally going!
In the 90’s as his four grandkids, Tegan, Justin, Shawn, and Ian were growing up, Hank (PopPop) would take each of them, one at a time, out on special “dates”. This was a special time for them to go out to eat, see a movie, or play a game and spend the night. He and they enjoyed this one-on-one time together.
He was crushed by his grandson Shawn’s death two years ago; they had developed a special relationship when Shawn would go work in his yard. He also recently enjoyed some time with Tegan, as this past year she picked him up from dialysis and took him home, as well as special celebrations in her home. He loved to hear from his grandson Justin and enjoyed his family updates of their baby coming.
He also loved spending time with his youngest grandson Ian. He was happy that he found someone in the family that shared his love of football.
Hank and his family enjoyed many wonderful Christmas, Thanksgivings, Easters, and family birthday celebrations together. Along with summer BBQs and other times together. He will be greatly missed in upcoming celebrations with family.
In 2011 his first great granddaughter was born, Amelia, followed by Keira two years later.
They were able to spend lots of time together, once a week was Papa-PopPop day. The girls, along with Grammie Karen would go to lunch with PopPop, do errands and appointments with him.
His great grandson Jonas was born the night before, less than 24hrs, before Hank passed away. The last phone conversation with Karen was to tell him of his great grandson’s birth. He was so happy and excited to hear this. We were looking forward to his 90th birthday, September 1st, when he was going
to be able to meet his newest great grandchild. We were planning a family celebration for him the weekend before, along with starting to plan a bigger celebration a few weeks later with friends.
The family is sad that instead it will be a celebration of his life, but happy that we had so many wonderful years with him.
Graveside services will also be held at Fort Logan National Cemetery on Monday August 29th for family.
