David Cruz TREJO
TREJO, David Cruz
David Cruz Trejo, 77, of Austin, Texas passed away on August 9, 2016, due to complications from Parkinson's disease. He is survived by his wife, Tommie Trejo, of Austin, Texas, and his three children, Jeffrey Trejo and wife Jeselyn, Enrique Trejo and wife Debbie, and Irma Trejo and her partner Amy, as well as his five grandchildren (Alejandro, Joaquin, Isabella, Elias, and Baby Jeoph). David had a huge personality and competitive spirit. He was admired and respected by all.

David Trejo, son of Juan Trejo and Benita Cruz, was born in Wheelock, Texas, on March 3, 1939 but was raised in Bryan/College Station, Texas. The son of a share cropper, David remembers as a young man having to work the cotton fields of the Rio Brazos Valley area. Through hard work and perseverance, David attended Texas A&M University while at the same time participating in military reserve duty where he was recognized as a rifle sharpshooter. He was called into active duty and stationed in Fort Polk in 1961 in response to the Cuban Missile Crisis. He was released from active duty after a year of service and returned to college. David graduated with distinction from Texas A&M with a Bachelors in Business Administration in 1964. David credits Texas A&M University for the opportunities he had in life. As such, he was an avid fan and supporter of Texas A&M.

Upon graduation, David moved to Houston, Texas, where he would eventually work for the Texas Department of Health and Human Services. He had a long and distinguished career with Texas DHS where he would ultimately serve as a Deputy Commissioner. He retired from service in 1998.

David enjoyed sports and, as a youth, was an accomplished baseball player. Later in life, David developed a passion for the game of golf and would teach the game he loved to his children and other family members. He could be found on most weekends on a golf course where he found great pleasure spending time with his golfing buddies. He would later join the Pan American Golf Association where he served as the secretary of the National association and president of the Austin chapter from 1978-80. In addition to the game of golf, David was proud to call himself Texas Democrat and instilled in his children a sense of social justice. He had a sense of wonder and belief in things greater than himself that was hard to describe. He loved going to movies, traveling, and the study of history. He was extremely proud of his children and greatly loved his wife, children, and grandchildren. David Trejo will be missed.

The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 PM on Thursday, August 11, 2016, at Harrell Funeral Home, 4435 Frontier Trail, Austin, Texas. A rosary will be recited at 7:00 PM.

A funeral mass will be celebrated at 10:00 AM Friday, August 12, 2016, at San Jose Catholic Church, 2435 Oak Crest Ave., Austin, Texas. Interment will follow in Cook Walden Capital Parks, Pflugerville, Texas.
