Jack Walker Moss(1927 - 2016)
MOSS, Jack Walker Jack Walker Moss was born on January 20, 1927 in McKinney, Texas to Orlia and Ermyne Mitchell Moss. He passed away on Friday, June 17, 2016 in Lewisville, Texas at the age of 89. It was in McKinney where his father served as Tax Assessor/Collector of Collin County and Assistant Fire Chief that Jack fell in love with all things mechanically and firetruck related. At the age of seven his family moved from McKinney to Bryan, Texas, where he attended Bowie Elementary, Lamar Junior High, and Stephen F. Austin High School. He played trombone in both junior high and high school. He was also a member of the Bronco football team and the Acapella choir, was elected an officer at Boys State, and selected Senior Favorite by his classmates. At age 11, Jack joined Boy Scout Troop 148 in which he actively participated as Senior Patrol Leader and was awarded "Best Scout" honor in 1940. His Eagle Board of Review took place on Pearl Harbor Day (December 7, 1941), and he received his Eagle Scout Badge on Scout Sunday in 1942. Jack was especially proud his two sons and two grandsons are Eagle Scouts, making it a third generation family tradition. After graduating from high school, Jack started at Texas A&M University on D-Day in June of 1944 where he majored in mechanical engineering and was a member of the Corps, D Troop (Calvary), and the varsity diving team. Jack remained true to the Aggie call to serve God and country. As he began his final semester at A&M in the fall of 1948, he met his future wife, Polly Faye Clark. Polly had come to Bryan to teach girls physical education and serve as tennis coach at Stephen F. Austin High School. Upon arriving in Bryan, Polly went directly to First Christian Church hoping to find someone there who might have an available room for rent. Divinely, the Moss family home was located next to the church. Jack and Polly were married almost two years later on July 8, 1950, in Iowa Park, Texas. After graduation from A&M, Jack worked for Phillips Petroleum at the Sweeney, Texas refinery as an assistant to the mechanical superintendent. After he and Polly married, they lived in Bay City, Texas, where he worked for Phillips until 1952. In June of 1952 they moved to Wichita Falls, Texas, where he worked for Wichita Engineering and later became chief engineer at Wichita Clutch Company. There he distinguished himself as the innovator of water-cooled clutches and brakes which became widely used in the marine, logging, and drilling industries. Known for his fairness and integrity, Jack was chosen "Boss of the Year" during his time at Wichita Clutch. His two sons, William Dale and Ronald Walker, were born in Wichita Falls. During their 31 years in Wichita Falls, Jack was active in church and civic organizations. He was a Deacon, Sunday School teacher, and active leader in Boy Scout Troop 4 at First Christian Church. In 1960 he and his family accepted a call to plant a new Disciples Church in Wichita Falls. As a charter member of Park Place Christian Church, he served as Chairman of the Building Committee, Chairman of the Board, and long-tenured Elder. There he helped found and lead Boy Scout Troop 84 in which his sons, Bill and Ron, became active members and leaders and achieved the rank of Eagle Scout and earned their God and Country Awards. As an active member of the Society of Professional Engineers, Jack served as President and was chosen as its Engineer of the Year. He served multiple terms on the Executive Board of Juliette Fowler Benevolent Communities in Dallas. During this time, he received his MBA degree from Midwestern State University in 1972. In 1977 Dana Corporation bought Wichita Clutch Company, and in 1982 Jack moved to Arlington, Texas as Dana's Accounts Manager. After ten years in Arlington, he moved to the Houston area, where he continued to teach, train, and design until his retirement in 2000. In 2002, he moved to Lewisville, Texas. In retirement, he remained active at Creekwood Christian Church and served as a Docent at the National Boy Scout Museum and on the Board of the Texas Fire Museum while pursuing his two greatest passions: Polly and grandpa. Eight months before his death, he added a third: great-grandfather. Jack is preceded in death by his parents, Orlia and Ermyne Moss, and his brother, William Moss. He is survived by his wife, Polly; his sons, Bill and Ron and his wife, Deb; his grand-daughter, Ashley Daly and her husband, Craig; his grandsons, John and Benjamin and John's wife Chelsi; his great-grandsons Clark and Luke Daly and a third grandson, Lincoln Walker Moss, due in September; his sisters, Nancy Bannister and Dolly Hudgins, and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. A service to celebrate Jack's life will be held 11:00 a.m. Friday, June 24, 2016, at Creekwood Christian Church in Flower Mound. Interment will follow at 4:30 p.m. at Crestview Memorial Park in Wichita Falls. The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Thursday evening at Mulkey-Mason Funeral Home in Lewisville. Memorials can be made in memory of Jack Walker Moss to Creekwood Christian Church (Flower Mound), Juliette Fowler Communities (Dallas), or the National Boy Scout Museum (Irving).
