Joe passed into the loving arms of Jesus on June 12th at St. Luke's Hospital in the Medical Center. He was surrounded by his family and close friends.

Joe was preceded in death by his parents, Elizabeth Ann and Tony Staples

Joe is survived by his loving and caring wife Jan; children Bart and Brett Staples, Callie and Chris Meeks and his sister Jenna Underwood; Grandchildren; Daisy, Benjamin, Tyler, Oakley and Rafe.

Joe was a 1964 graduate of Bellaire High School. He was selected to the All-City Baseball Team for three years as a catcher for Coach Ray Knoblauch. He graduated from Texas A&M in 1968. While at A&M he was selected to the All-SWC team three years playing for Coach Tom Chandler and was the SWC Batting Champion in 1968. He signed a contract with the Cleveland Indians. In 1998, Joe was inducted into the A&M Athletic Hall of Fame.

Joe worked for 17 years for the Thomas A. Read & Co., a Swagelok distributor. In 1987 Joe became a Swagelok distributor and owned West Houston Valve & Fittings Co., for 21 years.

The family wishes to thank the medical team at St. Luke's, especially Dr. Leo Simpson and Dr. Lubna Kazim. Also, they wish to thank all of the nurses on 6 South 1 for their special care.

A Memorial Service celebrating Joe's life will take place on Saturday June 25, 2016 at 11am at Memorial Drive United Methodist Church, 12955 Memorial Drive, Houston, TX 77079.
