Floyd Lee "Buddy" Stainback Jr.
Floyd "Buddy" Lee Stainback, Jr. 86, passed away on June 2, 2016, at his home in Mandeville, La. Survivors include his two children, Steve (Buck) Stainback of Mandeville, La., and Margaret (Meg) Stainback Adams (Orr) of New Orleans, and three grandchildren, Catherine E. Stainback, Tucker O. Adams and Connor O. Adams. Buddy's wife of 37 years, Peggy Little Stainback, predeceased him, having died in 1993. Buddy was also predeceased by his brother, Gene, and his parents, Floyd, Sr. and Dovie Smith Stainback. Buddy was a native of Dallas, TX. He grew up in Port Arthur, and graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School and Texas A & M University with a degree in Geological Engineering. During college, he spent his summers working as a cowboy at the historic Dixie Dude Ranch in the Hill Country near Bandera, Tx. He served in the Air Force as a 2nd Lieutenant from 1952 to 1954, and was stationed in Japan as a Radar Technician, Airborne. After his military service he accepted a position with Gulf Oil Company in the New Orleans offshore office, where he was employed for most of his career. After transferring to Houston in 1981, he retired in 1989 from Chevron Oil Company. After he retired, Buddy volunteered at the Audubon Zoo. He worked with the reptiles in the Swamp Exhibit and was much loved by staff and fellow volunteers. Buddy supported several charities, including Wounded Warriors, Doctors Without Borders and the American Heart Association . Buddy traveled widely after he retired, including several trips to South America and Europe. Buddy was first and foremost a family man who was loved and adored by his children and grandchildren, each and every one of whom will miss him. He loved working with his hands and there was nothing that he couldn't fix. He was always working on a project, whether it was helping Buck rebuild one of his many sportscars, or being the brains behind the many addition and renovation projects at Meg and Orr's home. A private service was held on June 2, 2016. The family would prefer donations to the charities above that he supported.
