Robert E. Velten
January 22, 1929 - May 16, 2016

Robert Edwin Velten, 87, entered into eternal rest on Monday, May 16, 2016, at Sunshine Haven Hospice Facility in Olmito, Texas.
Bob, as he was affectionately known to all, was a native and lifetime resident of Brownsville. Bob attended local schools through his sophomore year, and at that time went to the Riverside Military Academy in Gainesville, GA. He graduated in 1947, the second ranking two year student. After graduation, he returned to Texas to attend Texas A&M, where he received his Bachelor of Architecture. Also, while at A&M, Bob was commissioned in the Air Force. In 1952, he married the love of his life, Agnes E. Tipton.
In 1954, Bob attended Wight-Patterson Air Force Base for three months and then was sent to Okinawa. Bob was the Maintenance and Repair Officer, at both Kadena AFB and Naha AFB, overseeing the maintenance and construction of the base. Bob had an eight year commitment with the Air Force Reserve, and stayed active in the Air Force Association, retiring in 1980 with the rank of Lt. Col. in the U.S. Air Force Reserves.
Bob was a local architect for many years practicing in his own office. There are countless buildings up and down the Valley that were designed and built by Bob. Bob was an active member of both the Junior Chamber of Commerce and the Brownsville Chamber of Commerce, serving as the Chamber President in 1970.
Bob was raised in the Central Christian Church Brownsville, where he later served as Elder. Both he and his wife Agnes were also active members of the First Presbyterian Church, where he served as Sunday School Leader.
In his spare time, Bob flew airplanes, a hobby he enjoyed for 54 years having learned to fly when he was only 16 years old. Bob not only flew gliders and sailplanes for 15 years, but he also served as the instructor for the RGV Soaring Club. Additionally, Bob enjoyed history and was quite the history buff. Bob was deeply loved and will be profoundly missed by all of those fortunate to have known him.
Bob was preceded in death by his parents, William Adam and Minnie Mae Velten; his son, Robert E. Velten, Jr., a brother, William M. Velten; and a brother-in-law John Albert.
Bob is survived by his wife of 63 years, Agnes T. Velten; a daughter, Valerie Lynn Kaiser and her husband Jordan; a son, William Douglas and his wife Elizabeth Velten; a daughter-in-law, Vickie Velten; his grandchildren: Adam M. (Oksana) Kaiser, Elliot Sloan Kaiser, Benjamin Velten, Elizabeth Kaiser, Luke W. Velten, Johnathan Velten, and Sarah Velten; a great-granddaughter, Julia Katheryn Kaiser; a sister, Jo Beth Albert; a brother, S. Dean (Bee) Velten as well as numerous extended family members.
The Funeral Service will be at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, May 20, 2016 at Darling-Mouser Funeral Home, 945 Palm Blvd., Committal services will follow at Buena Vista Burial Park. The American Legion John Hanson Post 43 will render Military honors at the graveside.
Adam Kaiser, Elliot Kaiser, Luke Velten, Johnathan Velten, Benjamin Velten and Flay Mohle are honored to be serving as Bob's pallbearers.
