John E. Hilliard ‘64

Colonel John Edward “John Ed” Hilliard ’64, USAF, Retired, was born in Jasper and grew up in the neighboring town of Newton, Texas. He received his BA from A&M and his JD from UT School of Law. He entered the Air Force in 1967.

John served as Base Staff Judge Advocate at Wurtsmith, Castle, and Elmendorf AF bases, and as Staff Judge Advocate of the 23rd and 16th Air Forces. He was the Military Judge for both the Shaw District (North and South Carolina, Puerto Rico, the Canal Zone) and for the Randolph District (Texas bases). He was Chief, Military Justice Division, at the Pentagon. While in this assignment, he served as Chair of the Joint Services Committee that passed the Military Justice Act through Congress under President Reagan. His decorations included two Air Force Commendations, five Meritorious Service, and two Legions of Merit. He retired from the Air Force with twenty years of service.

John taught history and government at St. Thomas’ Episcopal School in Houston, where he coached his Mock Trial Teams to thirteen straight regional championships. He was a volunteer tutor for Port Houston Elementary School and served in the First Methodist Street Ministry, where he also taught Sunday school. John enjoyed travel, reading, and watching sports.

John visited ninety-seven countries during his lifetime. He often traveled with a mission group from his church, going to Siberia ten times to work in orphanages near Tomsk. It was there he met and later adopted his son.

John is fondly remembered for his giving and loving spirit. He is survived by his son, John Vlad Hilliard, and numerous nieces and nephews, including Meghan Gray ’20.
