Gus W. Lampe
March 9, 1922 - March 30, 2015
Gus W. Lampe died March 30, 2015 at the age of 93. He was born Gustav Otto Marquart in San Antonio, Texas on March 9, 1922 to Gus and Elizabeth Marquart.
Placed in the San Antonio Mission children’s home when he was four, Gus was rescued by his uncle and adopted by Werner and Nannie Lampe where they made a home with Gus on their dairy farm in LaGrange, Texas.
After finishing high school, Gus joined the Navy and served in the Asiatic Pacific area during WW II with location primarily off the west coast of California and the Pacific Northwest. After proudly serving his country, Gus enrolled in Texas A&M College where
he went on to graduate with a Bachelor of Science degree in Agriculture Administration. During his time at A&M, Gus met Ethel Boswell, the love of his life, and they were married in 1949 prior to his graduation in 1951. Gus and Ethel were active at First Methodist
Church in Bryan where he could be found leading the singing for the Men’s Bible Class along with serving in varied leadership roles for 41 years. Gus was a member of the Bryan-College Station Kiwanis club, the American Legion and the Texas A&M University Former
Students Association. Gus supported his family with a varied career serving as a District Representative with GMAC, an insurance and real estate broker, Counselor with the Texas Rehabilitation commission, a Senatorial Aide to the late Senator William T. (Bill)
Moore and taught real estate at Blinn College at their Bryan, Texas campus. Gus never met a stranger and in his active years could be found sketching caricatures of people that impacted his life.
Gus and Ethel moved to San Antonio in 1996 and found a new church family at University United Methodist Church where Gus continued to lead the singing for their Sunday school class and was an active participant in the Silver Bucket Singers providing comfort
and joy to the congregation and special ministries.
Gus is survived by his wife of 65 years, Ethel Boswell Lampe; his sons, Charles Lampe and wife, Diane, Donald Lampe and wife, Mary Beth, David Lampe, and Paul Lampe and wife, Kay; granddaughter, Elizabeth Lampe; grandsons, Michael Lampe, Ross Lampe, Sam Lampe,
Ben Lampe, Chris Logan and wife, Jeanette and Aaron Logan and wife, Carrie. He is also survived by great-grandchildren, Rheannon, Candace, Hanna, Samantha, Brennan and Ashleigh; great-great-grandchildren, Arabella, Zoey and Brandt.
A Memorial Service will be held at 1:00 p.m., Thursday, April 9, 2015 at University United Methodist Church, 5084 De Zavala Road.
