Norfolk - Michael "Larry" Hogue, 58, died on February 12, 2015, at home in the arms of his loving son and wife. Born and raised in Graham, Texas, to Marilyn Whitson Hogue and the late Billie Eugene Hogue, Larry was a proud graduate of Texas A&M University and an experienced copy editor for The Virginian-Pilot until November of 2014.

Among those who will remember Larry are: His son, Huck; his wife, Ellen; his mother, Marilyn Blalock; his brother, Randy; his sisters, Carissa Kopystecki and Tracy Wilson; his beautiful dog, Kuma, and his snarky cat, Aggie.

Larry graduated Graham High School in 1973 and went on to receive a Bachelor's in Geology from Texas A&M University in 1979. After a short career as a well logger, Larry returned to college this time earning a Bachelor's in Journalism from the University of Texas at Arlington in 1988 while interning with The Dallas Morning News. It was during his time on the copy desk of the Corpus Christi Caller Times that he met staff news photographer Ellen. The two married shortly thereafter and had Huck. In 1996, Larry took a job as a copy editor with The Virginian-Pilot and moved with his family to Norfolk, VA, where he would stay until his death.

Larry lost his father at age 16, and was deeply devastated by his death. As a result, Larry lived every day with a devotion to loving those around him constantly and unconditionally. His greatest fear in life was that he would be taken from his family like his father before him, so he treated each day like it could be his last right up until the end. He looked for every opportunity to express his love and gratitude with humor and his unique words of wisdom usually at the same time. In this way, he was like a father to all, and comparisons to both Santa Claus and "The Dude" were not at all uncommon.

A casual memorial will be held 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, February 18, at the Fred Heutte Center at 1000 Botetourt Gardens, Norfolk, VA, followed by a gentle celebration of his days at his family's home. In the coming weeks, his ashes will be scattered in College Station, Texas, close to his beloved alma mater. In lieu of donations, Larry and his family ask anyone reading this to instead love and understand others near and far, and to (in his own words) just be a real, live person.
