Gallaway, Emily

December 8, 1923 – January 23, 2015
Emily Susan (Dillehay) Gallaway, 91, of Bryan, Texas passed away peacefully of congestive heart failure on January 23, 2015 in Norman, Oklahoma. Susan was born December 8, 1923 to Joseph Henry Dillehay and Annie Laurie Whitehead in Jacksonville, Texas, one of 6 children. In 1941, Bob Mitchel Gallaway married his beloved Susie Q and together they shared 69 blessed and wonderful years. They resided in Bryan, Texas for 68 of those years.

Susan was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Bob; brothers Joseph, Jr., Charles, and James; and sister Bonnie.

Susan is survived by her sister Mary Jane Coleman; sisters in law Phylis Bailey and Gladys Dillehay; children Mickey (Judy) Gallaway of Houston, Suzanne (Rick) Hall of Houston, Mary Cay (Tom) Woodfin of Norman, OK; grandchildren Todd and Bobby Hall, Molly Brooks, David and Laura Blackerby, and Sam Woodfin; great grandchildren Mackenzie and Ryan Hall, Hailey, Connor, and Braden Shaw, and Charlotte Brooks, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Susan received her bachelors and masters degrees in education from Texas A&M University at a time when women were a rarity on campus. During her career as a first and second grade teacher in the Bryan public school system, she achieved the honor of Henderson Elementary teacher of the year. An active member of A&M United Methodist Church, she taught Sunday school and contributed her delicious cooking to church, social and family events. As Susan neared retirement, she pursued golf with the same perseverance and enthusiasm that she approached all things, becoming the first female to join the historically all male Brazos Golf Association. Susan is remembered as a fun loving, passionate and generous individual in everything she did, always quick to laugh and ready for adventure.

The family thanks Delois Simpson of College Station, the care staff of Sterling House of Norman and Good Shepherd Hospice for their friendship, support and excellent care.

Friends and family are invited to attend the memorial service on Saturday, February 14 at 1 pm at A&M Methodist Church in College Station, TX. Memorial contributions may be made to A&M United Methodist Church.
