LAFAYETTE - Funeral services will be held on Friday, October 31, 2014 at a 3:00 PM Mass of Christian Burial in Martin and Castille's La Fleur de Lis Chapel for Hayden E. "Pete" Mayeaux, M.D. who died on Wednesday, October 29, 2014 in Lafayette, Louisiana. 

Interment will be in the Garden of Memories, also known as Woodlawn Cemetery, in Old Metairie, New Orleans on November 3, 2014 at 11:30 AM

Reverend Keith Landry, Pastor of St. Anne Catholic Church, will be the Celebrant of the funeral Mass and will conduct the funeral services. Lector will be Katie Mayeaux Jones. Giftbearers will be Janeth Moresi and members of Our Ladies Prayer Group.

Dr. Mayeaux is survived by: his wife of 61 years, Norma Crane Mayeaux: his sons, Dr. Maxwell Hayden Edward, Paul English, and Luke Andrew; daughters, Tracey Elizabeth Mayeaux, Katie M. Jones; granddaughter Trisha Kristen Mayeaux; and sister Myra M. Smith. He was preceded in death by his son, John Barton Mayeaux, mother Etta English Mayeaux Pitre, father Gilmore Mayeaux, step-father Pierre Odon Pitre; and his sister Birdie M. Jeansonne.

Pallbearers include: his sons Max, Paul, and Luke; Kent Jones; Neil Greene; Dwight Lemoine; Chuck LeBlanc; Marcus Smith; and Dr. Terrence Tiersch. Honorary pallbearers include: Bill Lemoine; P.J. Bordelon; Colonel Ed Story; Dr. Howard Alleman; Jared Menard; Patrick Stokes; and Dirk Detraz.

The family sends a sincere, heartfelt thanks to the staff of Cornerstone Village South, especially his caretakers who showed much kindness to Dr. Mayeaux, he loved sharing their humor and other stories. Also, a special thanks to Dr. Morris Hoffpauir, Pat, Joanne and Javella of Hospice of Acadiana, and Drs. Jeffrey Thibodeaux, Kevin Courville, and Akshey Gupta.

Pete was a simple man who accomplished many complicated achievements and goals. He attended Holy Cross High School in New Orleans, received an athletic scholarship in football and track and field at Texas A&M University where he studied zoology and then received his medical degree from LSU Medical School in New Orleans with a residency in OB-GYN. Continuing medical education included training at Harvard, Rice, and Arizona Universities.

Dr. Mayeaux was a Board-certified Fellow of the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology and had a thriving medical practice in OB-GYN in Abbeville and Lafayette Louisiana for 40 years. Dr. Mayeaux was a member of the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology; the American Medical Association; the Knights of Columbus; Kiwanis International; a charter member of the Abbey Players Theatrical group; the Cajun Ski Club of Lafayette; and the Louisiana Tarpon Club.

Pete's favorite pastime was enjoying life with his family and friends on his beloved sport fishing boat, the R/V Roamin' Empire, and at the family hunting camp, the "Barge", on White Lake. He also enjoyed music and was the lead singer (crooner) for the Texas A&M Big Band. Pete's hobbies included: building boats, hunting, fishing, camping, snow skiing, and general "comradee" as he put it with family and friends. He participated in many salt-water fishing competitions with his family and friends and won Best All-around Boat in the Abbeville Kiwanis Tarpon Rodeo in 1973 and 1974. Athletic achievements include: All-city fullback at Holy Cross High School; was the NCAA Southwest Conference Champion in the javelin throw at Texas A&M in 1952; a member of the Texas A&M 440-relay team; and ran the low hurdles for the Aggie Track team.

A Rosary will be recited at 2:00 PM on Friday, October 31, 2014 in Martin & Castille's SOUTHSIDE Location.

The family requests that visitation be observed on Friday from 1:00 PM until time of services.
