Dr Robert Sheldon Dewers

Birth: Apr. 10, 1922
 Indiana, USA
Death: Jul. 24, 2014
 Kerrville
 Kerr County
 Texas, USA

Robert Sheldon Dewers, age 92 of Kerrville, passed away Thursday, July 24, 2014. He was born April 10, 1922, in Aurora, Indiana. His parents were Charles Clifford Dewers and Shirley Ross Dewers. Bob had three younger brothers, Kenneth Dale, Donald Keith and Charles Ross who predeceased him. He attended Aurora High School where he earned the Bausch-Lomb science award.
He chose forestry as his career. His studies at Colorado State College (now Colorado State University) were interrupted by WWII. At Fort Knox, Kentucky, he became a lieutenant. After a tour of duty as a tank officer in the 4th armored division in eastern France, he finished his military duties as a military police officer in Paris, France, and Frankfurt, Germany. During this time, he met and married Suzanne Pingault in Paris.

He brought her back to Fort Collins, Colorado, where he finished school with a Masters degree in forestry. Here Linda Sue was born as their first child. Later in Dallas, Texas, Bob spent time with Procter and Gamble, and the landscape nursery business in Dallas where a son, Alan Gabriel was born.

In 1965, he accepted an assistantship as a doctorate candidate at Texas A&M University. On graduation, he accepted a position with the Texas Agriculture Extension Service in San Antonio. This led him and son, Alan, to Kerrville one Sunday when they bought a 5 acre lot for a future homesite.

He was recalled to College Station where he became a full professor in forest science. Here he established a curriculum in urban forestry and taught dendrology.

Dr. Bob retired from Texas A&M University in 1984. He and Suzanne had built a home in Kerrville and became members of St. Peter's Episcopal Church. A proud activity was the establishment of the Riverside Nature Center where he and an active group selected and planted trees and shrubs to form an arboretum unequaled in the Hill Country.

His beloved wife died in 2007 after many pleasant years. After living alone for a while, he became a resident at Plaza on the River in Kerrville.

He is survived by daughter, Linda Sue Sturdivant of Dallas; son, Alan Gabriel Dewers of Kerrville; grandchildren, Christopher Sturdivant and Stephen Sturdivant; great grandchildren, Logan Ray Sturdivant, Wayne Taylor Sturdivant, Chase Nicolas Sturdivant
and Summer Nicole Sturdivant.

Services will be held Tuesday, 29, 2014, 11:30 AM at Grimes Funeral Chapels officiated by Father Tom Murray. Graveside services will be held Thursday, July 31, 2014, 11 AM at Restland Cemetery in Dallas.

Memorials may be made to the Robert Rhodes Scholarship Fund, c/o Dept. Of Forest Science, Texas A&M University, College Station, TX 77843.
