John W. Page Sr.
April 24, 1926 - August 31, 2014
John W. Page, Sr., 88, went home to be with Jesus on August 31, 2014. He lived a long and blessed life. His out-going personality and love of music touched the hearts of all who knew him.
John was born in San Antonio, Texas on April 24, 1926 to E.T., Sr. and Cora Page. He was the youngest of three children who shared many happy times together and remained tightly knit throughout their lives. After graduating from Alamo Heights High School in 1943, he attended Texas A & M University for a short time before joining the army to serve as a paratrooper in World War II. He was part of Company G, 505th Parachute Infantry Regiment. Once the war ended, he returned home and married the love of his life, Mae Ola "Doodle" Page, on April 19, 1947. They shared 67 beautiful years together.
John was a loving husband, caring father, successful business man, and accomplished musician. He was self-employed the majority of his professional career. He started Page's Fabrics in 1962 and at one point owned four stores throughout San Antonio. In addition to running his businesses, he never stopped playing his horn. John started playing the saxophone at age 10 accompanied by his mother on the piano. By the time he entered high school, he was playing with local San Antonio swing bands. He joined Chuck Riley's Alamo City Jazz Band in 1973, playing the soprano sax. During his time with the band, he played with many jazz legends like Norma Teagarden, Henry Cuesta, Herb Hall, Tommy Newsome, Spiegel Willcox, and Connie Jones.
His two children, John William Jr. and Kathy could not have had a better dad or role-model. He also was cherished by his grandchildren and great-grandchildren who, lovingly referred to him as Papa. John worked long hours growing his business, but also enjoyed having fun and trying out new things. His favorite times were spent playing the sax, fishing at the coast with his buddies, tending to his vegetable garden, playing cards and dominoes, and traveling to jazz festivals. Later in life, he found much joy playing his horn for nursing home residents and his church family. Even though he is gone, John's musical legacy continues through the jazz and gospel recordings he spent hours preparing and delighted in giving to anyone who liked music.
John is survived by his wife, Mae Ola "Doodle" Page of Universal City and daughter, Kathy Kline and husband Richard of Cibolo. John is also survived by many grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents, E.T. Page, Sr. and wife Cora Henderson Page; sister and brother in law, Doris Tomasulo and husband Bill; brother and sister in law, E.T. Page, Jr. and wife Margaret and son, John W. Page, Jr.
Visitation will be held at Hurley Funeral Home, 118 W. Oaklawn Road in Pleasanton on Tuesday, September 2, 2014 from 2:00PM to 8:00PM. A funeral service will be held at Trinity Baptist Church, 319 E. Mulberry in San Antonio at 2:00PM on Wednesday, September 3, 2014. Interment will follow at Sunset Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Trinity Baptist Church building fund, 319 E. Mulberry San Antonio, Texas 78212, or the charity of your choice .
