Col. Robert Joe Schero, Sr. 33º, U.S. Army (Ret.) died peacefully Monday, May 12, 2014. Born May 27, 1929 in San Antonio, he was the son of Charles and Florence Schero. His life was one containing many outstanding engineering accomplishments and with a strong dedication to the community in which he lived. He started his career in Civil Engineering with the Texas Department of Transportation in 1954 after attending Texas A & M University, class of 1950. He then worked in commercial construction for Spaw-Glass General Contractors from 1957-60 when he joined Civil Service. He was employed at Randolph AFB, Air Education and Training Command, Directorate of Civil Engineering retiring in 1989. Robert was proud of his Masonic Affiliations. He was a Past Master of Albert Pike Lodge #1169 AF&AM Masonic Lodge, a member of San Antonio Scottish Rite Bodies and the Alzafar Shrine of San Antonio. With his many Masonic activities, he became a 32º Master of the Royal Secret in 1971 in the Valley of San Antonio and served as the head of all four bodies. He received the rank and decoration of a Knight Commander of the Court of Honor in 1979 and the 33º Inspector General Honorary in 1993. As a Shriner, he was a 30-year member of Camp Alzafar and he was a Life member of the Arab Patrol. He retired from the Army Reserves, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in 1982 with the rank of Colonel. He worked diligently in the community as a member of the Northwest Lions Club rising to the office of President in 1962. He was the best husband, father, and grandfather and we will miss him for the rest of our lives. Survivors: wife of 64 years, Jerry Lynn; sons, Robert Jr. 33º, Charles Joe III (Jenny); daughters, Cynthia "Cindy" Ann Gabel (Mike), Peggy Lynn Clark; also 8 Grandchildren and one Great Grandchild. He was a 56 year member of Hope Lutheran Church. The family will receive friends from 6:00-8:00 p.m. on Monday, May 19, 2014 at Porter Loring Mortuary North.
