May 25, 1923 – April 20, 2014
Lloyd Rogers “Cal” Calaway, devoted husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, and avid fisherman passed from this life on Easter Sunday, April 20, 2014 in Bryan, Texas at the age of 90 years old. Visitation will be from 2pm until service time Wednesday, April 23, 2014, at Callaway-Jones Funeral Home in Bryan. Services will begin at 3 p.m.
He was born May 25, 1923 in Alanreed, Texas and grew up on Harbor Island where he developed a passion for the sea and fishing. During WWII he served as a Merchant Marine Officer, sailing in both the Atlantic and Pacific Theaters. After the war’s end he attended Texas A&M graduating with the Class of ’51 with a Mechanical Engineering Degree. He worked for Monsanto Chemical in Texas City, Texas for twenty years. In 1970, he went to work for Bonner and Moore Consulting Firm in Houston where he had the opportunity to travel extensively. These travels gave him a deep appreciation for culture, led him to lifelong friends, and inspired his spiritual foundation. He and his family lived in Galveston and LaMarque, fishing Galveston Bay until retiring to Camp Creek Lake in 1990, where he continued to fish for 24 more years.
On December 27, 1963 Cal married the love of his life, Zoe Belle Grove. He was a passionate family man who remained devoted to his wife and four children. As a beloved father, he taught them many things, most of all, the importance of strong family values. Every Easter for the last 34 years, he opened his home to his extended family and friends to host an annual fishing tournament. His passing on Easter Sunday, Cal’s favorite day of the year, with his family gathered at the reunion, was truly a blessing that deeply touched us all.
He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Zoe Belle Calaway of Franklin; four children, Terry Noack and her husband Mike of Bryan, Sidney Cranston of Lexington, Leslie Mordente of Galveston, and Lloyd Calaway Jr of Franklin; six grandchildren, Jeremy Cranston, Misti Steer, Kathryn Noack, D.J. Mordente, Anthony Mordente, and Alissa Mordente; seven great-grandchildren, Jordan, Jazmine, Jaylee, Jesse, Macie, Beckett, and Charlotte, and a wealth of extended family and friends who were very dear to him.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the Lions Club of Franklin or The Franklin Food Bank.
